Reunite Immigrant Kids With Their Families

The marches taking place across the country this weekend are really about the soul of America.

A good start.
The right of refuge must not be refused.

Thanks for the Opportunity. Can I Quit Now?

A new job isn’t really working out. Here’s how to move on to the next thing without feeling guilty. And without rushing.

I am hiring.
The benefits are skint.
Mostly love and attention and liberty.
The choice of addresses is limited and uncertain.

Sooner is better.     As soon as you can is best.

The Best Films of 2018, So Far

Our critics share their recommendations for catching up on new movies during the long, hot holiday.

I will watch any or all of these films.

When I have changed my address.

Russians Offered Business Deals to Brexit’s Biggest Backer

As Arron Banks spent millions on Brexit, meetings at the Russian Embassy opened opportunities in gold and diamonds. Critics see American parallels.

Brexit failed months ago.
The EU has offered only an unfriendly divorce.

The Bounty of Netflix International

“Sunday’s Illness,” a Spanish film, leads the pack in the latest offerings of Netflix’s foreign-language pictures.

Fine by me.
Subtitles are better for me.

Impeached President Rousseff of Brazil Pursues a Senate Seat

Dilma Rousseff’s ouster two years ago was among the most stunning political downfalls in Brazil. Now she wants to return to the capital as a lawmaker.

She should have no difficulty getting elected.
She may have problems getting seated.

Hillsborough Police Commander Faces Trial in 95 Soccer Deaths

A judge allowed the case against David Duckenfield to go to trial, almost three decades after soccer fans were trampled and crushed to death at a stadium.

I doubt there will be a conviction.
He was not responsible for the panic.

The fault was probably with the contractor.
A sleazy stadium is not exciting or satisfying.

Hundreds Arrested During Women’s Immigration Protest in Washington

The women were charged and released after staging a sit-in at a Senate office building in Washington, D.C., over the president’s immigration policies.

Trump will not win.
I am offering when you need a place to call home.

Of Course It Could Not Happen Here

We are all frogs in President Trump’s slow-boiling pot.

Hold the images in the back of your mind and vote in November.

Trump is an evil monster.

In Less Than a Minute, E.U. Tells Britain to Get ‘Realistic’ on Brexit

After the briefest of discussions, Europe’s leaders urged Mrs. May to outline her plans. But first she must persuade her divided cabinet in London.

White America’s Age-Old, Misguided Obsession With Civility

Those who say that the civil rights movement prevailed because of polite dialogue misunderstand the history of protest.

Women, Own Your ‘Dr.’ Titles

I used to think the best response to online abuse was to retreat and be quiet. Now I think we need to blaze and burn.

If one is an authority on a subject, speak on that subject authoritatively.
I am not an authority.
I have opinions.
Sometimes I can back them with facts and others published opinions.
I hope to stand corrected when I err.

What Does the United States Stand For?

Thinking beyond the flags and fireworks that will mark the Fourth of July.

I dreamed of ocean passages under sail as a boy.
I have learned that I do not want to be captain or crew or solo sailer.
Rowing on wilderness lakes is sufficient adventure.

A long walk in the woods is good.  Meeting a black bear or moose is also good.  Watching trout is better than eating them.

I sat on a rock ledge on the side of a lake and watched satellites drift overhead.

I will do that again.

I ate lunch by an isolated pond as a marsh harrier defended her eggs.

I watched, amazed, as a golden eagle rose from the river's edge.

I stopped on a silent road to study my map.  Three wild turkey poults wandered out of the tall weeds and back into them.

I rowed through a stillwater and surprised three beaver with explosive tail slaps.

I drifted with an otter through a backwater.

I camped by a lake and listened to the summer loons and their echoes.

Flags, fireworks, and politics are things of boundaries.

I like civilization but I need to listen to red squirrels and Canada jays.

I want to see hawks and eagles as well as buzzards.
