18 Shuttered Catholic Churches May Soon Be Up for Sale

The Archdiocese of New York deconsecrated the churches in June, paving the way for the properties to be repurposed or sold.

Parishes loose their congregations as the melting pot does its work.

What’s on TV Tuesday: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ and ‘Difficult People’

Peter Quill and his motley crew blast back to the future — and into daddy issues. And Julie Klausner and Billy Eichner get their whine on in a new season.

Travel between the stars requires time travel.
Looking out into the universe one is looking back in time.
It is noted in the measure of distance: Light Years.

China’s ‘Giant Infants’

Many Chinese millennials are self-centered, emotionally isolated and struggling to find independence and fulfillment in a fast-changing society.

Just Another Tourist

A father introduces his daughter to a New York tradition he has never sampled.

"You can't step in the same river twice."
The horse drawn cab through Central Park is a tourist tradition.
The city is dynamic because populations are temporary.

New York Today: Ferry Journeys

Tuesday: A trip to Rockaway, Amy Schumer on Broadway and a film to unite New York.

"How to get there: Take the Rockaway ferry route to the Rockaway landing. Travel time from Wall Street/Pier 11 is about an hour."
A good trip.

The M.T.A. is a creature of The State of New York.  The governor populates the board of directors and state subsidies balance its budget.

A Better Way to Protect Robert Mueller

Two Senate bills promise to check President Trump from removing the special counsel. Too bad they won’t work.

The legislation is unnecessary.
If Trump stops the investigation he is pleading guilty.
The House would start impeachment proceedings.
Trump is rallying his base in an effort to maintain his legitimacy.  That effort is probably futile.

Five TV Shows to Watch This Week

Three great shows return this week, Viceland is screening a challenging documentary, and did you watch “Game of Thrones” on Sunday?

The Roosevelts from Ken Burns on PBS has been on the Television here.  My attention to it is spotty.

Time Is Running Out on Texas Bathroom Bill

With just days left in a special legislative session, supporters of transgender restrictions are pessimistic about the chances of legislation in the face of business opposition.

That is a relief.

A Classic French Home With Iconic Memphis Design

The late designer Ettore Sottsass may be finally getting his due, but his most passionate collector refuses to take him too seriously — just as Sottsass himself would have wanted.

Studying the article is not misspent attention.

I have no real love for the home, which I can't see, the collector, who finds
the failure of imagination fascinating or the work which expresses the frustration of Ettore Sottsass.

I have been there and I left.
I do not want to do pointless work.
The attempt to get things right is enough.
