Anguished 911 Call of Man Who Said He Had Tried to Drown His Children

The caller told an emergency dispatcher in North Carolina that he had sought help for “sexual desires” and that his children would be taken away from him.

We have the end of the story.
The important part is the middle.
People should not be placed in Alan Lassiter's state.

The courts will deal with him but there will be no resolution of his insanity.

The Connection Between Cleaner Air and Longer Lives

Despite challenges to the law as costly and unnecessary, the data make it clear that people are living longer in a less polluted America.

Michael Greenstone has simplified the relationship between air pollution and quality of
life to triviality.

Combustion is not the only source of fine particles.
Fine particles are not the only combustion product that destroys quality of life.
Fine particles play no part in photochemical smog.
Fine particles play no part in acid rain
Fine particles are not the toxic mechanism of chemical pollution.
Mineral dusts like asbestos and silica are ignored.
Organic dusts like cotton linters (brown lung) and coal (Black lung) are ignored.
There is more to smoke than soot.
Creosote is not considered. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creosote

It Took E.P.A. Pressure to Get VW to Admit Fault

Volkswagen executives told environmental regulators repeatedly that discrepancies on pollution tests were not a deliberate attempt to deceive Washington officials.

Martin Winterkorn decided to have VW lie and has been caught in that lie.
Martin Winterkorn bet his company and lost his bet.
The E.P.A. will decide the fate of Volkswagon.

6 People Killed as S.U.V. Crashes During Texas Police Chase

Officials are investigating whether the more than dozen people in the vehicle that crashed were immigrants being transported by smugglers.

Hunting immigrants is not a Texas problem.

Education Gap Between Rich and Poor Is Growing Wider

Racial disparities in education have narrowed significantly, but the achievement gap between more affluent and less privileged children is wider than ever.

The state legislators are successful in their efforts to produce an hereditary aristocracy.

The Upshot

Applying for Financial Aid Just Got Easier

The government has changed how students can apply for federal financial aid by allowing it to be done both earlier and more easily.

The D.O.E., an executive department, is resisting the move toward aristocracy.
I approve of the effort.
I am not sure I approve of the method.

Bronx District Attorney and Judge May Trade Roles

Delegates at a judicial nominating convention voted unanimously to give Robert T. Johnson the nod for an open Supreme Court position.

Video: Who Is Xi Jinping?

President Xi Jinping of China is to arrive in the United States on Tuesday for a state visit at a crucial crossroads in the Sino-American relationship.

The Papal visitation has overshadowed the Chinese President.
The U.S. has real problems with China.
They must be resolved diplomatically.
Force, whether virtual, economic or military will be ruinous.

Judgeship Bid by Robert Johnson, Bronx District Attorney, Could Bolster Wife’s Career

If Mr. Johnson is given a judgeship, it would bolster Justice Dianne T. Renwick’s chances of being selected by Governor Cuomo to head the state appellate court.

I expect politicians to practice politics.

Notes on Methodology

More detail on how pollution and life-years were measured.

Good mathematics will not save the paper.
It suffers from a bad model of benefit.
Life extension is not equivalent to quality of life.
I am interested in living well and less interested in simple survival.
Silicosis is not a good thing.
Emphysema destroys quality of life long before it kills.

Mercury poisoning is even more destructive of quality of life.
Lung cancer is terminal.  So is liver cancer.

California: Wildfire Deaths Rise to Six

A body was found in a burned-out home in Northern California, bringing the death toll to six from two of the state’s more destructive wildfires in recent memory, the authorities said Wednesday.

Fire is part of the California ecosystem.
These fires are worse than many.

Despite its reputation as a concrete canal, the Los Angeles River is green in some spots. The city recently announced that the architect Frank Gehry would help revitalize the 51-mile waterway.
