A Noisy Cafe Next Door

Questions about a noisy neighboring business, a lease that may outlive a tenant and creating a condo or co-op.

Noise is a problem.  Getting a neighbor to abate the noise of business will require the full force of the law. Getting the landlord to reduce the rent would be easier.
A sound proof sleeping box is possible.
Noise canceling headphones are another cheap fix.

Mayor de Blasio’s School Agenda

Ambitious initiatives will fail or fall short if the quality of reading instruction is not significantly improved.

Both reading and arithmetic are essential.

Mathematics and logic can come a bit later.

A College’s Value

A reader cites a single factor in the discussion: initiative.

a good fit between the student's personality and the course of study is necessary.

Bean counters do not do well in art school.
Creative people do not make good book keepers.

My 10 Favorite Books: Raymond Pettibon

The artist shares the titles he’d most want with him on a desert island.

I cannot make a list.
I find pleasure in books.
They take me to places and times I would not soon visit.
There are skills in them I have not thought to acquire.
There are people I cannot otherwise know.

I am working on it.

The Upshot

A Promise to Critics

Some university administrators say the available data on economic diversity is too imperfect to be meaningful. The Upshot’s editor responds.

I have no problem with the precision of David Leonhardt's data.
He is not measuring the desired quality of diversity.
Students should be exposed to a diversity of culture.
A diversity of wealth seems rather trivial to me.

Do Wild Dogs Sleep as Much as Your Pets?

Do dogs in the wild sleep as much as domesticated animals?

I still don't know.
Direct measurement should not be hard to do.
Keeping a dog in a small apartment does not fit with a sedentary life.

A federal grand jury accused the friend, Joseph Meek, of withholding information in the investigation of Mr. Roof, who has been charged with killing nine people in a South Carolina church.

Joseph Meek should make the best deal he can.
He will stay off death row and serve about seven years.
