‘The Weather Experiment,’ by Peter Moore

Peter Moore’s new book tells the story of the meteorologists who decoded the skies with observation and measurement, and then helped society read the codes, too.

I will read Moore's book with pleasure as time allows.

"It is impossible to read “The Weather Experiment” without thinking of climate change and modern meteorological science. Nearly a decade before the Royal Charter storm, when “dunderheaded politicians” shrank funding in Francis Beaufort’s busy Hydrographic Office in 1851, the man who brought order to the wind wrote these prescient words: “I will not trifle with your time by repeating here any hackneyed truisms about the comparative expense to the country in the cost of surveys or the loss of ships and cargoes, but I will entreat you to weigh the small sum which you propose to save against the large amount of mischief which may result.”"

More Woes for FIFA

Swiss federal prosecutors said they had new evidence of 28 acts of possible money laundering linked to FIFA’s 2018 and 2022 World Cup bid contests.

The Swiss appear not to have considered money laundering a crime until about half a century ago.

One Step Toward Justice in the Garner Killing

New York City’s $5.9 million settlement with Eric Garner’s survivors, while fair, does not answer what happened or erase his family’s pain.

"There is much more to do. But the move to close the books on the Garner family’s wrongful-death claim, led by Comptroller Scott Stringer, who has authority to settle claims against the city, is a wise, cost-effective one that shows compassion for the family of a man whose life was senselessly taken."

Shale Gas and Climate Change

The world will not abandon the comforts of a carbon based civilization.
Individual people must do what we can to reduce our impact on the world.

The greater problem still has people's attention.

All of fashion is signaling.
Men's wear has been less dramatic than women's wear.
All mathematical distributions have two tails.
It is more difficult to make a show of men's wear.

Public Urination in New York Becomes Test Case for Policing

As city leaders wrestle with how to adapt police tactics to a lower-crime era, the Police Department has suggested it would loosen its approach to the offense, which skeptics see as a backslide.

The law against public urination combined with the lack of public toilets is the remains of the attempt to impose abstinence from alcohol.
