Behind every ecological insult visited upon the planet by reckless oil companies, there is governmental complicity. In some cases it is lax oversight associated with incompetence or laziness, and at other times it is a willful refusal to enforce the rules because the civil servant has been paid off in some fashion. Just as the penalties for companies which circumvent the oversight need to be severe, the government employees who fail to do their jobs must not only lose those jobs, but also be banned from future government service in any capacity.
