Academic Freedom Cannot Be Guaranteed - Room for Debate
Protection of academic freedom will require constant and tenacious defense around actual cases, such as the “Xinjiang 13.
"China's universities, like its society at large, have come a long way since then. Today, Chinese professors have much more freedom to teach, debate and discuss topics without fear of political retribution. However, in the event of a political or social crisis that the government deems dangerous, the authorities can immediately clamp down on everyone."

The assumption that there is academic freedom in China is mistaken.

Discharged for Being Gay, Veterans Seek to Re-enlist
"To be eligible for re-enlistment, former service members cannot have been discharged under “other than honorable conditions,” Ms. Lainez said.  The majority of people released under the policy since 1993 — a significant number of them highly trained intelligence analysts and linguists — received honorable discharges."   I hope that's true.
There appears to be resistance to the policy change.

Libyans Turn Wrath on Dark-Skinned Migrants

. . . many rebels were turning their wrath against migrants from sub-Saharan Africa, imprisoning hundreds for the crime of fighting as “mercenaries” for Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi without any evidence except the color of their skin.
I hope the madness passes quickly.  Bussing them to the south, one way, is probably the best we can hope for.   The last payment won't be there for them.

In California, Amazon Pushes Hard to Kill a Tax
If they have a physical presence they owe the taxes.
"If you don't try, you can't be rejected."
The only way to get an exemption is to ask for it.
They will owe no more for asking.

"At its heart, the standoff between Amazon and California is simple: the state passed a law at the beginning of the summer requiring online retailers with a physical presence in the state to collect sales taxes. Amazon denies that its subsidiaries in the state, which include a unit that designed the Kindle, constitute such a presence."

Back to older stuff.
