      Four Protesters Dead in Syria

Sept. 27 Syria's Christian community remains largely supportive of Mr. Assad, fearing reprisals from Sunni Muslims if he falls or if protests degenerate into civil war. Their fears are echoed among minorities across the region, who wonder if it takes a strongman to protect them.
Sept. 15 Syrian security forces shot dead 29 people in some of the country’s most restive locales: Homs, in central Syria; Dara’a, a southern town where the uprising began; the suburbs of the capital Damascus; and the outskirts of Hama, Syria’s fourth-largest city. The toll marked one of the bloodiest in weeks.

Expand the Use of Food Stamps? - Room for Debate
Should restrictions on using the benefits at fast food restaurants be loosened?
Allow "Meals on wheels." or similar services.  Insist on convenient "healthy" hot meals delivered.

Have Consumers Become More Willing to Pay for Content? - Room for Debate
Have consumers changed their expectations about what media will be free or cheap, as the Napster era has yielded to iTunes?
The "Free" services are not as available as they were.  Consumers will pay if they feel they must.

Food Stamps for Fast Food: A Hobson's Choice - Room for Debate
What alarms me is the growing conflict between food reformers and nutritionists, on one side, and anti-hunger advocates on the other.

There is no fight here more money would not resolve.

The reservist may win.  The Bank Looks Guilty to me.
This is the reason there is title insurance.  Buy it if you have not.
The D.O.D. may have been remiss in its torpor.
I am still glad not to be on the jury.

Bring Naps, Recess and the Arts Back to School - Room for Debate
In the absence of time to engage in rest, in physical activity and in disciplined creativity, it’s doubtful that more hours of traditional study will do children much good.
The benefit of the longer day is to the parents.   The kids learn as much as they can as fast as they can.  Keep them learning.

    An Interview With Frida Giannini
An interesting business.  There is more fashion in this one than I want.
Beyond fashion and art, why are things good?  Some fashion but not all becomes classic.

Fruit Growers, and the U.S., Would Suffer - Room for Debate
If production costs suddenly increased because of labor shortage or higher wages, consumers would probably shift to similar and less expensive imported fruit.
Regulation can control but not stop that.  The whole world wants that fruit.  We control the food stamp market.  We can insist that it be supplied by domestic growers who treat their workers well by national standards.
