Can U.S. Colleges Defend Academic Freedom? - Room for Debate
When China has banned scholars, U.S. universities haven't fought back. Should they be doing more do defend academic freedom?
    No.

A False Dilemma for U.S. Colleges Standing Up to China - Room for Debate
The people in China responsible for banning foreign scholars are not the same as those signing exchange agreements with U.S. universities.
"How do American universities balance their responsibility to defend academic freedom with their need to be engaged with the world's most dynamic economy?"
China is sovereign. The Chinese Government sets the rules in China.
Academic freedom says that the professor is sovereign in matters academic.
China is well within its rights to say what and who may be studied.
    Secrets are everyone's right.
Learning them is an academics job.
Banning does not conflict with Academic Freedom.

In Eyewitness Testimony, Memory Fails Us - Room for Debate
Identifications are critical in solving violent crimes committed by strangers, but victims' memories are not like video cameras.
Eyewitness testimony is sufficiently questionable that it should not be allowed at trial.  Prosecutors should no be allowed to build cases around it.  We probably cannot do without it in police investigations.
The criminal case should not include it.

Are Research Papers a Waste of Time?
Cheating is easy.  Thinking is hard.  Both students and professors need to practice thought.  Digging is far easier.

States Roll Out Appliance Rebates With Widely Varying Results

Other peoples money is a wonderful incentive.  These were federal dollars from the stimulus program.  When I read appliance source labels I see Mexico, Brazil and China.  Stimulus there is hardly required.  Many of these programs seem to be laggard because state authorities wanted to have better ability to steer where the profits landed.  As described the programs should have been easy to run.

A Gay Former Player Responds to Kobe Bryant
“A Gay Former Player Responds to Kobe Bryant - http://nyti.ms/iksHYQ”
"What our heroes say and do means something — and in an America where sports stars carry more influence and in some cases more credibility than senators, what they say matters more than ever."
      Sadly true.
The change in culture is called for from the inside.  It will work better from there.  Scolding from outside only induces deafness.
Thug culture must disappear.  I can't tell them.

The Problem With Shortcuts in Research - Room for Debate
Digital tools offer too many conveniences and well-digested materials for students to use them in meaningful formative ways.
    Ask better questions.
An instance:   The influence of the American civil war on metallurgy.

"Tengzhong concluded the initial deal with G.M. in June and was supposed to close the deal by September. Some in Detroit were furious that the Chinese review process then dragged on for eight months, during which the American auto industry showed few signs of recovery and the potential value of Hummer continued to decline."

Can We Trust Eyewitness Identifications? - Room for Debate
How can courts use eyewitness testimony and lineup IDs without over emphasizing their                                                                                              reliability?
I am not a court of law.  Courts must avoid such testimony.
Prosecutors must not use it to build cases.
