Can We Trust Eyewitness Identifications? - Room for Debate
How can courts use eyewitness testimony and lineup IDs without overemphasizing their reliability?
The courts cannot use them.   The police can but the results are not evidence.

U.S. Is Set to Sue a Dozen Big Banks Over Mortgages
It will come out in court that these purchases were ordered by congress.
    There is no tort here.
That does not mean there will be no settlement.

I.B.M. to Buy Algorithmics for $387 Million
I.B.M. gave up the hardware business to the Chinese.
This is just more business as usual.

Research papers are not a waste of time. Poorly done research has always been a waste.
Thoughtfully constructed research is a wonder. Thought is very rare.

      Arms and the Airport
Question from a foreigner: What is the difference between concealed carry and open carry, except, well, that in one case you see who has a gun and the the other case you don't? Which is more pro gun? Open carry or concealed carry and why?

The guns must travel in checked baggage.
These rules are mainly a tease of the civil population by enthusiastic Confederates.
Open carry is a constant threat by the armed person as a counter to fear.  Concealed carry is another charm against fear.    Effectiveness is another question.
Both are counter gun. Open by aggression.  Concealed by reassurance.
      Open is more pro gun.

Open because it shows faith in the power of personal guns.

Preventing Wrongful Arrests - Room for Debate
The next logical step is to improve police procedures to avoid prosecuting innocent suspects.
This would improve efficiency.  We want the process to be effective.  Efficiency is immaterial.

    All "cloud" operations are distributed.

More Than Just an Oil Spill
Schrod, what makes you think the oil spilling into the ocean would be any cheaper than oil coming out of Saudi Arabia? What makes you think it would pour into American gas tanks? This oil is BP's property and BP would sell it at the highest possible price to anybody who'd buy it. What's even more reprehensible is that this oil cost the lives of eleven Americans. Are their lives too high a price for "cheap" oil? I think so.
Grayguy is wrong. It is a cheap price and often paid.

There is not much information on the effects of the spill.   The reports are all under court seal while the suits go forward.
