Should the School Day Be Longer? - Room for Debate
While more time in the classroom may benefit children from disadvantaged backgrounds, is it right for everyone?
    Home schooling is always available.
School must be more than public daycare but it should be included.

Focus on First Grade - Room for Debate
It's far more important to offer developmentally appropriate preschools, where the goal is to prepare all children for first grade.
As the executioner said: "Different strokes for different folks."
The teacher is responsible for keeping a diverse group learning at an optimal rate.  Knowing what the task is and having the skills, time and attention to do it is a heavy demand on the teacher and the school board.  A time motion study approach is not going to do it.  In a community under financial strain there will be demands to run a warehouse and let the television bring up the children.

      Opinion
      Yes, it is depressing.
A chemical fix will not do.
      Just spend the money.
Every child should grow up physically and mentally.

Help for Parents and Society - Room for Debate
Longer school days can lead to fewer crimes committed by young people and a decline in teen pregnancy.
This is a very mechanical view of the problem.
If we keep the children in cells until they are twenty there will be no delinquency and no teen pregnancy.

Should the U.S. Continue Selling Arms to Taiwan? - Room for Debate
The Obama administration approved a $5.8 billion arms sale package to Taiwan over China's strong objections. What are the consequences?
It will be $5.8 billion returned to our economy.  Taiwan will be encouraged.  China will make more noise for a few years.

Bring Naps, Recess and the Arts Back to School - Room for Debate
In the absence of time to engage in rest, in physical activity and in disciplined creativity, it’s doubtful that more hours of traditional study will do children much good.
More drill will be of little benefit.  Keep the children growing and learning.  The rest of it must follow.  They will encounter problems that require disciplined effort and will surmount them.

Define 'Real Indians' - Room for Debate
The intersection of race and citizenship in Indian Country never fails to create a tragicomedy of tribal politics.
Add race to any problem and the result will be very strange.  This is an internal tribal power struggle.  My opinion does not count.  I do not see it as a good action.

Harold McGee has a very practical  approach to cooking. I appreciate it.  I have not thought of him and his views for some months.  Thank you.  I have bookmarked his topics page.  I listed its URL above and here:
