Stephanie Saul, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 hour ago
The two Republicans tried to claim credit for bringing help to Georgians, despite President Trump’s initial waffling over whether to sign the bill. The Democrats said the $600 payments to Americans were too low.

The Democrats are winning so far.

More noise.

Early Voting Numbers in Georgia Senate Races Put G.O.P. on Edge
Astead W. Herndon and Richard Fausset, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 2 hours ago
While polls suggest that the state’s crucial runoff elections are up for grabs, Republicans have grown worried about strong turnout in Democratic areas and mixed messages from President Trump.

Republican believers in Richard Nixon should be looking for exits.

Warp Speed Officials Say Covid Vaccine Distribution Is Going Too Slowly
Rebecca Robbins, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 3 hours ago
“We know that it should be better, and we’re working hard to make it better,” said Moncef Slaoui, a leader of the federal effort to accelerate vaccine development and distribution.

Trump is still trying to be correct.  Covid-19 should be trivial by his oppinion.

Most Americans Are Expected to Save, Not Spend, Their $600 Check
Nelson D. Schwartz and Gillian Friedman, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 3 hours ago
While lawmakers debate increasing the stimulus payments to $2,000, experts say it would make far more sense to give more money to the unemployed.

For many the $600 is the last cash they will see for months.  They must hoard it and spend it slowly on
winter necessities.  This is survival  money.

U.S. Penalizes Venezuelan Officials Involved in Imprisoning Citgo Executives
Pranshu Verma, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 3 hours ago
The so-called Citgo 6 were lured to Venezuela for a business meeting in 2017 and have been sentenced to prison on charges of corruption.

The survivors of the Seven Sisters and their friends in the Republican party are not sovereign.
These six must stand trial for their management of Citgo.

Thomas Kaplan and Rebecca Robbins, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 10 hours ago
Three weeks from taking office, Joe Biden called vaccinating Americans “the greatest operational challenge we’ve ever faced as a nation” and offered a bleak assessment of the months ahead.

Trump and his minions have been slow walking the vaccine project.
There will be more money in lagging.

The ‘Resistance’ Formed Because of Trump, With an Assist From Jon Ossoff
Lisa Lerer and Reid J. Epstein, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 15 hours ago
Mr. Ossoff’s 2017 special election was the first campaign Democrats had to focus on, after the shock of President Trump’s win. He lost, but the organizations formed around that race kept growing.

Georgia knows it has center stage.  It has changes to demonstraite.

Trump’s Veto Threat Did Little to Alter Stimulus Package
Michael D. Shear and Catie Edmondson, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 23 hours ago
The president’s threat to scuttle a $900 billion relief package held workers in limbo, but did little to change the bill’s outcome.

Trump is a verbal bully.  He has no real love of hot red work for himself.

McConnell Blocks Vote on $2,000 Checks Despite G.O.P. Pressure
Catie Edmondson, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 23 hours ago
Senator Mitch McConnell instead provided vague assurances that the Senate would “begin the process” of discussing the checks and two other issues that the president demanded lawmakers address.

McConnell seems to believe suffering improves people.

Pompeo Weighs Plan to Place Cuba on U.S. Terrorism Sponsor List
Michael Crowley, Charlie Savage and Eric Schmitt, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 day ago
The move would complicate any effort by the incoming Biden administration to resume President Barack Obama’s thaw in relations with Havana.

The Cubans of South Florida resent the loss of their lives of privelege.

How Lin Wood Became a Pro-Trump Conspiracy Theorist
Jeremy W. Peters and Alan Feuer, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 day ago
The defamation lawyer L. Lin Wood has transformed into a fierce advocate for President Trump whose error-riddled lawsuits have promoted falsehoods about election fraud.

L. Lin Wood has the fervor of a convert.  He should know better.

Biden Admonishes Trump Administration Over ‘Obstruction’
Thomas Kaplan, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 day ago
“Right now, we just aren’t getting all the information that we need from the outgoing administration in key national security areas,” the president-elect said.

Admonishment is a very gentle response to Trump's behavior.

Why Larry Summers MUST Believe $2,000 Checks Are A Bad Idea
Ian Welsh, Ian Welsh - 1 day ago
Larry Summers, the man who is reliably wrong about everything, came out against a $2,000 check for Covid release. It’s worth examining why, because Larry is an economics exemplar, what makes him different is not being wrong about almost everything, it is being willing to shoot his tweet off about it. This figure shows that […]

In so far as I can tell Ian Welsh has the facts.

Knocking on Two Million Doors in Georgia
Audra D. S. Burch, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 day ago
Control of the Senate could hinge on Black voters — and on an ambitious effort to get them to the polls in the largest numbers ever for the Jan. 5 runoff elections.

"Whatever it takes."

Barr Leaves a Legacy Defined by Trump
Katie Benner, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 day ago
Though he sometimes departed from the president, the outgoing attorney general’s term was dominated by how he navigated the Russia investigation and other fraught issues.

Barr has done Trump's bidding.
That will be Barr's legacy.

Kentucky Hurting While Awaiting Federal Pandemic Aid
Ben Casselman and Will Wright, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 day ago
Urban and rural fortunes diverge in the state, with the pandemic compounding troubles that predated it.

Mitch McConnell might be known as a Savanarolla.
Kentucky has been" a bonfire of the vanities."

House Votes to Override Trump’s Veto of Military Bill
Catie Edmondson, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 2 days ago
Republicans joined with Democrats to hand President Trump a rare legislative rebuke in the final days of his presidency. The bill will next be taken up by the Senate, where it is expected to pass.

A government must pay its mercenaries.

al Blasts Trump’s Fraud Claims
Marc Tracy, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 2 days ago
With a scathing front-page editorial, the Trump-friendly tabloid joined another of Rupert Murdoch’s papers, The Wall Street Journal, in attacking the president’s attempts to undo the election result.

At the end of the day Rupert Murdoch values drama rather than bloody civil war.
The war would be dramatic but it would kill more than half of his customers.
The dead buy nothing and the smoking ruins would house only impovershed grieving refugees.
