Trump’s Final Days of Rage and Denial
Peter Baker, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 hour ago
The last act of the Trump presidency has taken on the stormy elements of a drama more common to history or literature than a modern White House.

This Peter Baker article is not labeled opinion.
Every point must be verifiable.

Republicans Pushed to Restrict Voting. Millions of Americans Pushed Back.
Nick Corasaniti and Jim Rutenberg, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 hour ago
Almost 160 million people voted this year, as new options made necessary by the pandemic removed many of the traditional barriers to casting ballots. Will it change the way America conducts elections?

Trump and his minions could not spoil the vote.

Cynthia Lummis, a Bull-Coaxing Conservative, Heads to the Senate
Luke Broadwater, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 8 hours ago
A right-wing rancher with a libertarian streak, Ms. Lummis, who served four terms in the House, is the first woman to represent Wyoming in the Senate.

The senate asks no questions about one's politics.

Joe From Scranton Didn’t Win Back the Working Class
Lisa Lerer, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 8 hours ago
An economic analysis of the counties that Joe Biden won and lost shows how the two parties are continuing to realign.

Archy Bunker does not like change.

Michael S. Schmidt, Kenneth P. Vogel, Katie Benner and Adam Goldman, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 15 hours ago
A billionaire from the San Francisco area sought clemency for a psychologist convicted of monetary crimes. The Republican donor Elliott Broidy and a lawyer who later represented Jared Kushner were enlisted.

Proof will be required.

Coronavirus Pandemic Upends Public Services and Jobs
Patricia Cohen, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 17 hours ago
As a standoff over federal aid persists, state and local governments are making deep budget cuts. “Everything’s going to slow down,” one official said.

Biden, Pelosi, McConnell Push for Year-End Stimulus Deal
Emily Cochrane and Nicholas Fandos, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 18 hours ago
Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, have agreed to try to reach a deal that could be included in a must-pass spending measure.

I don't think they will make a deal.  I could be surprised.

Unfortunately, aside from GOP sabotage, I don't think enough policy-adjacent people get this. I've been getting the same impression of failure to comprehend that, it seems, Jason Furman is getting 2/

Fiscal policymakers are far, far behind central bankers in reconsidering macroeconomic policy in an era of low interest rates. You can argue over whether central bankers have moved far enough, but at least they have indisputably moved.

Trump Orders All American Troops Out of Somalia
Helene Cooper, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 18 hours ago
While the number of forces — about 700 — is small, it is a continuation of President Trump’s efforts to withdraw the United States from what he has described as endless wars.

Trump is doing the right thing at the wrong time for the wrong reasons.
These problems belong with the U.N.

A $900 Billion Plan Would Help the Economy, but Not Fix It
Jim Tankersley and Ben Casselman, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 19 hours ago
While a compromise package gaining steam in Congress would provide urgent help to the economy, some people and businesses would be left out in the cold.

I can argue with the economic recovery.
The hope of nine hundred billion in stimulus money will not fix the economy.
Relief is what is necessary.  Stimulus does not usually help the dead.
The economy is not dead yet but it is on the way.

I'd say it's a combination of slow growth in working-age pop and lack of investment-driving new technology, but it doesn't matter that much; the point, as you say, is that we're awash in excess savings, and resources aren't scarce 1/

Replying to @paulkrugman
Great points, @paulkrugman. But riddle me this: why does it take such strong pro-cyclical monetary and fiscal stimulus to get adv. economies to full emp? Obv, "sec stag" has been invoked, but that's but a label for what we observe. My recent take: washingtonpost.com/outlook/2020/1

A Trump Immigration Policy Is Leaving Families Hungry
Zolan Kanno-Youngs, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 19 hours ago
The “public charge” rule was supposed to ensure that green cards go only to self-sufficient immigrants, but in the pandemic, it is driving up hunger and leaving Joe Biden with a quandary.

The idea of the public charge rule is the prevention of immigration.

House Passes Landmark Bill Decriminalizing Marijuana
Catie Edmondson, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 20 hours ago
The House passed sweeping legislation that would decriminalize marijuana and expunge nonviolent marijuana-related convictions. The measure is all but doomed in the Republican-led Senate.

The Republicans are against pot.  The policy was explicitly racist.
Republican racism is still with us.  Racism is deeply ingrained in most.

Native Americans Helped Flip Arizona. Can They Mobilize in Georgia?
Maggie Astor, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 21 hours ago
Very few of Georgia’s more than 100,000 voting-age Native Americans cast ballots in November. Even a small increase could make a difference in the Senate runoffs.

If one is not registered to vote one does not exist to politicians.
Register if it is possible.
Note that in recent years the Democrats change.
The Republicans do not change.

The Emotional Logic Of Covid Denial
Ian Welsh, Ian Welsh - 1 day ago
There is much moaning and wailing about how people in many Western countries, and in the US in particular, are not taking Covid seriously. Not wearing masks, not giving up Thanksgiving, not staying home, and so on. This is to be expected. Part of it is that our elites are not taking it seriously. We […]

The U.S. government is not an elite.
Privilege is positional, temporary, and revocable.
The residents tend to forget "the will of the governed" can change.
That will does not change physical facts.
The government must avoid abuse of the governed or suffer the consequences.

Sooner is better.  As soon as you can is best.

Annie Karni and Maggie Haberman, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 day ago

Trump Lost the 2020 Election. He Has Raised $207.5 Million Since.
Shane Goldmacher, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 day ago
President Trump’s nonstop fund-raising in the month after his loss at the polls ensures his new political operation — whatever shape it takes — will continue to be well-financed.

Sadly it might be true.
If he takes control of the money he will owe taxes.

Wisconsin’s Top Court Rejects Trump Lawsuit
Reid J. Epstein, NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 day ago
The Supreme Court in the state narrowed yet another legal path for the Trump campaign as it tries to overturn his loss to Joe Biden.
