How Low-Cost Airlines Alter the Economics of Flying

Even as mergers has significantly reduced competition, lower-cost airlines like Spirit and Frontier continue to play a role in moderating ticket costs.

The airlines are at the capacity of their gates.
To earn more they must get more passengers through ground security.

The Upshot

One Effort to Close the Gender Pay Gap Won’t Get a Try

The Trump administration has reversed an Obama-era rule that would have required companies to be more transparent about pay. But would it have helped?

"There is little data on whether forcing companies to disclose pay makes it more equitable, mostly because the pay of individual workers or companies is generally kept secret. The Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys companies about compensation, but publishes only aggregate, anonymous data. Researchers who have studied the few instances in which companies have publicly disclosed individual salaries say it is not enough to close pay gaps, nor is it essential — some companies have closed them on their own, without publicly reporting pay information."

Reporting would help.

A Bride, Not a Bridezilla

Looking Into the Future for a Child With Autism

As my son’s limitations became clearer, I found it harder every year to write a vision statement for his I.E.P. Then he showed us how.

From the outside his future looks bleak.

Review: ‘Unlocked,’ a New Spy Thriller, Same as the Old Spy Thrillers

Noomi Rapace plays an undercover C.I.A. agent in a film that serves up clichés with its suspense.

Call it a production failure.
The writer needed to think more about the problem.
This is a police problem treated as an intelligence failure.

Systems analysis is not visually dramatic.

Alexandra Pirici Installs a ‘Threshold’ at the High Line

Ms. Pirici, who lives and works in Bucharest and Berlin, will create a moving barrier of performers at the top of Manhattan’s verdant pedestrian highway.

I doubt it will have the desired effect.
The necessary act of abstraction is too far from the concerns of the interacting public.

Try a film about limits.

Deporting Dreamers

Subjecting the Dreamers to deportation is not actually consistent with American legal values.

All laws are made by people.
People can change them as they must.
The conservatives are still wrong.

Texas Abortion Restriction Is Temporarily Blocked

A federal judge ruled that opponents of the law, which would restrict the most common type of second-trimester abortion, were likely to succeed in court.

The separation of church and state applies to the Southern Baptist Convention.

On the Road: Two Children Brave the Irish Famine

Paul Lynch’s novel “Grace” asks timeless questions about suffering and survival through the story of a sister and brother in the Irish famine.

I do not feel much need to know.
The tale must be told.
Like the Holocaust I have heard enough of it.
Others have not.

Video Shows Utah Nurse Handcuffed After Refusing to Draw Patient’s Blood

Footage of the episode showed an extended confrontation between the nurse and a police officer during which she screamed, “Somebody help me!”

Jeff L. Payne made a huge mistake.
He could stay with his charge and call for a warrant.
He will be instructed in the law.
He is guilty of false arrest.

Judge Throws Out Most Serious Charges in Penn State Hazing Case

The judge made his ruling after a pretrial hearing, dismissing a number of felony charges. Lesser charges were left intact.

The courts will figure it out.

I think the judge has done the right thing.

Penn State should change its culture.
