Giant Sequoia ‘Tunnel Tree’ in California Is Toppled by Storm

I do not regret the rain.

‘Hidden Figures’ Ties ‘Rogue One’ at Box Office

In its first weekend in wide release “Hidden Figures,” about unsung black heroines in the 1960s NASA space race, pulled in an estimated $22 million.

I am surprised and gladdened.

Fox News Settled Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Bill O’Reilly, Documents Show

When Juliet Huddy rebuffed advances by Mr. O’Reilly, he tried to derail her career, according to a draft of a letter from her lawyers obtained by The New York Times.

The implosion of Fox News and all Murdoch properties would please me.
It would have pleased me more if it had happened a year ago.

I Got Gay Married. I Got Gay Divorced. I Regret Both.

Never have I fought so hard for a right that hurt me so much.

"Am I sorry that my marriage didn’t last “as long as we both shall live?” Yes.
Am I sorry that we got legally married? Yes, I am. Not only did marriage fail to keep us together; it sentenced us to an agonizingly drawn-out, devastatingly expensive divorce.
Would I do it again — fight for equality; make a life with a lover, do all I could to honor that love?
In a heartbeat."

Communication is a necessity.
Sooner is better.   As soon as you can is best.

White House Urges Research on Methods to Slow or Reverse Global Warming

A report recommends modest studies on the controversial subject known as geoengineering.

Publish the report.
https://downloads.globalchange.gov/strategic-plan/2016/usgcrp-strategic-plan-2016.pdf

Congress has not been doing their homework.
This report should have been published before the election.
The predecessor report should have been in the news before the election.

I have no confidence in the effectiveness of geoengineering.
The Republican party has chosen short term pleasure and power over
cultural survival.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mote_in_God%27s_Eye

"The museums exist to accelerate the rise of civilization after a collapse. The "Cycles" of civilization, war, and collapse have gone on for hundreds of thousands of years, leaving the Moties fatalistically resigned to their destiny. Only a mythical character called "Crazy Eddie" believes there is a way to change this, and any Motie who comes to believe a solution is possible is labeled a "Crazy Eddie" and deemed insane."

California Is First to Pay for Prisoner’s Sex-Reassignment Surgery

Prison officials agreed to cover the surgery for a 57-year-old inmate who was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping and robbery and has no possibility of parole.

California is trying.

D’Amato Removed From Plane After Urging Walkout Over Delays

The former Republican senator from New York was removed from a Jet Blue plane in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in an incident captured on video.

D'Amato should not travel on Jet Blue.

I am curious about the structure of the six hour and twenty minute delay.

Google did not find any information about this delay.

Supreme Court Blocks Special Elections in North Carolina

Justices blocked a ruling by a trial court, which had ordered special elections after deciding that the state’s legislative map had been tainted by racial gerrymandering.

"The Supreme Court’s brief order included no reasoning, and it said the temporary stay of the lower court’s decision would last only as long as it took the justices to consider an appeal from state officials."

The Supreme Court is being gentle with North Carolina.
The court will have to invalidate a great deal of federal law to rule in favor of the state of North Carolina.
If that happens there is the possibility of open revolt.

Southern China Is Blanketed in Smog as Beijing Gets Slight Reprieve

Worsening conditions brought unhealthy levels of pollution to parts of southern China, including Hong Kong, on Monday. Beijing’s smog started to clear.

The Chinese should be dying of lung diseases.
It should show in the statistics.
It should show in the satellite pictures.

Airport-Shooting Victims: Volunteers and Entrepreneurs, Vacation-Bound

How four of the five who were killed at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport were remembered by those whose lives they touched.

Ask Esteban Santiago.
Only he can know what was in his mind.

This kind of shooting should not happen.
To prevent another mass shooting the "mechanism" must be understood.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M'Naghten_rules

Repairing his mind would not be a favor to him.
