The Walrus and the Politicians

You’d think that lawmakers in places where ice is melting and the sea levels are rising, like Alaska and Louisiana and Florida, would be on the forefront of climate science, right?

Antibiotics in Livestock: F.D.A. Finds Use Is Rising

In an annual report, the Food and Drug Administration said the amount of medically important antibiotics sold for use in animals raised for meat grew by 16 percent from 2009 to 2012.

New Apple Tool Checks iPhones for 'Kill Switch' Security

Starting next summer, a new law will require every smartphone sold in California to include a so-called kill switch that renders the device unusable if it is reported lost or stolen. Apple now has a tool to check whether an Apple device has a kill switch turned on.

That will limit my possible losses.

Paying Afghanistan’s Bills

The combat mission in Afghanistan may be winding down for the United States, but the end to the financial obligations seems to be nowhere in sight.

" That commitment was solidified Tuesday as the American ambassador in Kabul and Afghanistan’s security adviser signed a bilateral security agreement that will keep a small contingent of NATO troops there for at least two years.
The United States and NATO partners recently agreed to spend $5.1 billion a year to pay for the army and police, until at least 2017. Western donors are expected to continue to give billions more for reconstruction and other initiatives, recognizing that Afghanistan won’t be weaned off international aid anytime soon. In fact, the government appears to be broke."

Calpers Isn’t Done With High-Fee Investment Gurus

The pension system is getting out of hedge funds. But it is sticking with its favorite expensively managed asset class: private equity.
Private Equity; Stocks and Bonds; Pensions and Retirement Plans; Hedge Funds; Asset Allocation (Personal Finances)

Josh Barro says private equity is no place for a new investment.  Hedge funds are no place for any investment.  He is correct.

Money that must be invested probably should go into  index funds.  Cash should be in FDIC covered accounts of less than $250,000.  The rules may have changed so ask and read the rules.

Housing in East Jerusalem

Howard B. Weber, president of the Coalition for Israel, disagrees with an editorial criticizing Israel.
Israeli Settlements; Palestinians

Howard B. Weber makes some questionable assumptions.
There is no symmetry in building.  There is no return of Palestinians to Israel. There is no durable land title in the "occupied territory" for Palestinians. East Jerusalem is "occupied territory".  There is more.
