With little regulation, Oklahoma City has become an e-cigarette boomtown where “vapers” flock to vapor shops to buy the smoking alternative products, which include nicotine liquids.

Reading Pain in a Human Face

Researchers have found that a computer is much better than people are at telling the difference between real and faked pain, a discovery that may lead to methods to detect children’s pain and to treat depression.

The personal recognition of pain is not innate.
Pain is a learned response to injury.
Meditative practice can suppress ones pain responses.
Berserkers  do not respond to pain.
The pain response has a large cultural component.

An About-Face on a Risky Transplant

News of the first face transplant, in 2005, was greeted with doubts and criticism. But the first comprehensive review of the more than two dozen such procedures since then has removed many early concerns.
Face; Transplants; Surgery and Surgeons; Medicine and Health

Obamacare should make the transplant procedure more available in the U.S.

"Leaders want to avoid the experience in China, where nearly all the initial recipients of hand transplants rejected their donor grafts because government officials stopped payment for anti-rejection drugs and the patients could not afford them."

Paradigming Is Hard

Too many ways to be slightly stupid.

As far as I can tell this is the crux of the political fights:
"So how do you do useful economics? In general, what we really do is combine maximization-and-equilibrium as a first cut with a variety of ad hoc modifications reflecting what seem to be empirical regularities about how both individual behavior and markets depart from this idealized case. And people using this kind of rough-and-ready approach have done really well since 2008, on everything from inflation to interest rates to the effects of austerity."

I do not have a professional knowledge of economics.
Any guesses and bets I make are a personal risk.
I tell you my best guess.  That is the truth of it.
The news is full of noise and opinion.
Much of it with ulterior motives.

Health Care Politics In One Sentence

No alternatives.
"Single payer" is not politically acceptable.
"
Obamacare looks the way it does because it has to.
Once again, for those who missed it: if you want to cover people with preexisting conditions, you must have community rating. If you want to have community rating without a death spiral — that is, if you want to keep an acceptable risk pool — you have to have an individual mandate. If you want to have an individual mandate, you have to have subsidies for lower-income Americans. And that’s Obamacare: a three-legged stool, with all three legs essential"
I am signed up for Medicare A&B.

Gail Collins is not as mistaken as Cliven  Bundy and she has a way with words.
Bundy is a conservative Mormon.  He holds with the faith as it was in 1900. That was after the army told the leadership that they were part of the Union and subject to federal law.

We Kill Germs at Our Peril

Dr. Martin J. Blaser offers a warning against the excessive use of antibiotics, saying it has distorted our internal microbial world, eliminating good bacteria and leading to various diseases.
Antibiotics; Microbiology; Digestive Tract; Medicine and Health; Books and Literature

". . . (T)he weight of evidence behind Dr. Blaser’s cautions about antibiotics is overwhelming. They are certainly lifesaving drugs — they saved his own life when he had typhoid fever, and he testified in Congress recently on the urgent need to develop better and stronger ones. But they are also immensely dangerous, both to individuals and to the firmly linked communities of microbes and men."
