David Rowland, 86, Designer of Stacking Chair

Mr. Rowland’s invention, which was an alternative to the folding chair, made it possible to store many chairs in a small space.

I have been sitting in these at Pratt for the last ten years.

Bill was a friend of David Rowland. He spent some years in partnership with him.

The 40/4 chair was requested by Adm. Rickover and took ten years of experimentation to develop. The steel seat version that I am familiar with is not strong enough to stand on in the middle of the seat. The kink comes out with a rubber mallet. The student arm is just a nuisance.
