Love Means Never Having to Say … Anything

A relationship between a young man and woman with similar illnesses presents unusual challenges. For starters, he can’t speak.

"Prepare for gestures"

Donald Trump’s Guide to Presidential Etiquette

For more than a year, Donald Trump has been violating Americans’ expectations of how presidents should behave -- yet Republicans have stayed almost entirely silent. To help them remember, we’ve been keeping a list.

The list needs the attention of an editor.
It, like Trump, is repetitive.

When Living Your Truth Can Mean Losing Your Children

A case involving a former Ultra-Orthodox mother who came out as a lesbian emphasizes the legal conflict between personal freedoms and agreements made in Jewish courts.

"“It is beyond dispute that, at a minimum, the Constitution guarantees that government may not coerce anyone to support or participate in religion or its exercise,” the judges of the Second Judicial Department of the Appellate Division wrote. “A religious upbringing clause should not, and cannot, be enforced to the extent that it violates a parent’s legitimate due process right to express oneself and live freely.”"

What Philip Roth Didn’t Know About Women Could Fill a Book

His characters were from the same places in New Jersey that I knew so well. Why didn’t they seem familiar?

"Philip Roth’s works are only curious about Philip Roth. Of course, most writers lead with characters like themselves, and for Roth’s contemporary Jewish readers, his warts-and-all portrayal of people like himself was an honor, inviting them into American literature. But that was the outer limit of Roth’s imagination. His strength lay in those brilliantly rendered characters and voices like his. His weakness was that those voices denigrated just about everyone else. His caricatured women are merely a symptom of this lack of curiosity: It shows up again in Roth’s religious characters, his Israeli characters, his non-Jewish characters, his anyone-who-isn’t-him characters. That’s why Brenda and the many other Jewish New Jersey women in his books, ostensibly so close to home, struck me as so unfamiliar. I didn’t know these women at all, because neither did he."
