Review: ‘The Moth Snowstorm,’ and Other Natural Bliss-Outs

Michael McCarthy’s book is both a paean to the earth’s beauty and an elegy for it.

Enjoy what one can.
Fix those parts of the world one can.
The world may not end in our lifetimes.
Living is a choice.
Death is the end of choices.

Motor fuel costs the earth.
Make it cost the users as much.

The Mennonite Church, USA has the proper position.

Death of 6-Year-Old Boy in Harlem Raises Questions for Child Welfare Agency

Zymere Perkins’s death this week has left his family, and the mayor, wondering why warning signs of possible child abuse did not lead to a different outcome.

The next victim is the mom.

An anonymous call to The Administration for Children’s Services, the city’s child welfare agency could have resolved the situation.

The Administration for Children’s Services, the city’s child welfare agency, would have removed Zymere Perkins from his home and mother and culture.
That was also not acceptable.

Is New York Ready for Solar Power?

New York City’s solar boom has been prompted by recent drops in installation costs.

The city is not ready where densities are high.
The state where densities are low is not ready for the hail sensitive present panels.
Hail resisting roof designs are possible.

End the Death Penalty

A law school dean writes that “the death penalty is a broken system” that “no amount of reform can repair.”

The dean is correct.
Life without parole is a better punishment.
It is also partially reversible.

You’ll Find Me in My Hammock, Inside

The Venezuelans taught me that hammocks are useful indoors as well as outdoors. When it’s cold outside, bring it in.

http://www.english-for-students.com/Show-A-Leg.html
Navel enlisted men slept in hammocks so the gun deck could quickly be cleared for action. Officers got births.  Civilian sailors had flat births.
Sleeping in a canvas hammock can hurt. Netting is better.

The Sweet Emotional Life of Bees

New experiments suggest that bees given treats may experience a positive, or optimistic, state of being.

I would not call the responses emotion.

Organic Milk Will Wait and Wait for You

A different, hotter pasteurization process helps explain why organic milk has a longer shelf life than the other stuff.

I am surprised.
It is the cow that is organic.

The 4 Traits That Put Kids at Risk for Addiction

Early trials show that personality testing can identify 90 percent of the highest risk children, targeting risky traits before they cause problems.

"Recognizing that most teenagers who try alcohol, cocaine, opioids or methamphetamine do not become addicted, they focus on what’s different about the minority who do."
An assertion requiring supporting evidence.

I knew addicts.  They were not cool.

Commuters said nothing seemed out of the ordinary as they approached the Hoboken train station. Then they were thrown from their feet and plunged into darkness.

There has been no report on the cause of the accident.

"The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but officials said there was no immediate indication that it was anything other than accidental. Officials would say only that the train was traveling much too fast at the time of the crash."

Breaking Bad News to Patients

Some doctors engage in light conversation with their patients before telling them their cancer has returned, but I have always felt that to be disingenuous, writes Dr. Mikkael Sekeres.

Dr. Sekeres is dealing with a difficult situation.
He is doing it well.

Oncologists get few real cures.
That is depressing.
