The Trouble With Welfare Reform

Readers offer their ideas, including job training, free child care and guaranteed jobs, and disagree with John Kasich’s call for more state control.

The nation claims to have an interest in healthy, civilized children.
It must then pay the cost of these children.

California Judge Rejects Request to Suspend Assisted Suicide Law

The law, which took effect on June 9, will not be blocked now, but the judge agreed to allow a lawsuit challenging the measure to go forward.

The argument rests on the Hipocratic commandment: First, do no harm.
Western Civilization is much less certain of what constitutes harm.

The suit should fail on "separation of church and state."

New Orleans Program Teaches Officers to Police One Another

A new course trains police officers to intervene when they see colleagues engaging in unethical behavior.

The program will work among officers of roughly equal rank.
It will work down the command chain and across the chain.
It will not work up the command chain.

Broadband Law Could Force Rural Residents Off Information Superhighway

A federal court ruling may halt the spread of municipal high-speed internet providers, which often serve households and businesses where commercial cable and telecom firms have been unwilling to go.

Vick Family Farms has a different problem.  They are operating through the cloud.
If they would operate on a private on site server their dependence on high speed service would disappear.  They could do business at a very low data rate.

Badly regulated near monopolies are fighting for dominance.
Shortly they will provide good service or go out of business.
The open net is an established set of rules proven in court.

The real horror of death is the thought that the end of control might not be the end of consciousness.
