Milestone for New Tappan Zee Bridge: It’s Halfway Done

Workers have begun laying the bridge’s signature feature — the cables — and if everything goes according to plan, the first section should open over the Hudson River toward the end of next year.

Ok.
I do not like the aesthetics of a cable stayed bridge.
We can discuss that.

How Lowering Crime Could Contribute to Global Warming

The rebound effect describes changes that inadvertently raise carbon emissions. A recent study illustrated one such rebound involving crime reduction.

I am not interested in drowning in detail.
Tax fossil carbon as it comes out of the ground or crosses the border.
Let people figure out what they individually can do.
We must end the use of fossil carbon.

Hopefully that is the end of the specific problem.

Guarding Those Beaches

A Long Island reader muses over what she sees as ungodlike behavior.

The fact that beach buggies are designed for sand does not make them part of a summer beach.

Patrol on foot or on horseback.
Emergency service can come by helecopter.

Lethal Force by the Police

Amnesty International USA writes that “American laws must be brought in line with international standards if the police are to be held accountable.”

Some of the sovereign states would fight such interference with their internal affairs.

9 Years in Jail, 3 Trials, 12 Judges and No Verdict in Bronx Murder Case

Carlos Vega was arrested in 2007, accused of killing a man in a bodega. He has been incarcerated with an unresolved case longer than anyone else in New York City.

He plead guilty to manslaughter.

The plea ended the uncertainty and moved him out of Rikers jail.

A group of friends asked if they could join a celebration for a woman in a South Bronx high-rise. The police say Julian Washington, 30, was killed protecting a friend in the fight that followed.

In two legal battles over the control of Viacom, judges found that the issues raised required a trial to examine whether Mr. Redstone was competent.

Sumner M. Redstone and his daughter, Shari have lost their case.
Control will rest with the board while competence is resolved.
With expected delays Mr. Redstone will die before there is a decision.
