A Fish Outlived the Dinosaurs. Can It Outlast a Dam?

The pallid sturgeon is threatened because it can no longer travel far enough on the Missouri River to find a healthy place for its eggs to develop.

It is\ an easy decision to replace the dam with pumps.
It will benefit the fish and the area can use the work.

The Common Core Costs Billions and Hurts Students

I thought a national curriculum would promote equity. But it does the opposite.

Yes.
A different pencil does  not improve education.
Young children memorize everything.
Older children begin to think abstractly.
Confusing the two processes leads to frustration.

Angel Food Cake, an Airy Bed for Summer Fruit

There’s a trick to making this light, versatile classic.

The cake is easy.
The available commercial fruit is not worth eating.
It is green when picked, shipped and sold.
Nothing else will take the abuse.

Source the fruit with care.

You Probably Don’t Need Dental X-Rays Every Year

For many people, it’s a needless expense that comes with needless risk.

I am not going to worry about the X-ray exposure.

One Police Shift: Patrolling an Anxious America

Riding along with officers illuminated fears they confront, compassionate gestures from the public after two recent ambushes against the police, and varied responses to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Police officers are human beings.
They are paid to risk civilian violence.
If they are underpaid they should take the matter up with their paymasters.
Police must not be allowed to initiate violence.

Fashion & Style

Sally Callaway, John Rader

Two sweaters emblazoned with a cat in a Santa hat brought the bride and groom together.

The lawsuit claimed that immigrant students had been funneled into substandard alternative programs rather than being enrolled in the district’s only public high school.

Gov. Cuomo’s U-Turn on Mass Transit

Having declared himself New York’s primary transportation advocate, the governor now needs to make a sustained political effort.

He even more needs to think
Some things will wait.
Laguardia should have a rail link.
The passenger and freight tunnels under the Hudson are needed soonest.
A rail spur to Hunts Point will help.

Skipping Out on the Sizzling Heat

A new club is offering people who can’t handle high temperatures (and lack a second home) the opportunity to spend weekends at a well-appointed house out of the city with strangers.

Any house is to me a personal space.
I do not share easily with strangers.

The Grief That White Americans Can’t Share

For our white friends and colleagues, police shootings are a tragedy in the abstract. For black people, they’re agonizingly personal — and devastating.

Police do not have a right to initiate violence.
