Review: At the Country Bistro, the Feel of Vacation

The restaurant has evolved from a breakfast and lunch spot to one that serves dinner as well.

Christopher Brooks did not like it.
Competition is a good thing.
Try the competition.

Brooklyn Man Arrested a Day After Being Shot by Officers

Paul Mathurin, who was wounded during a confrontation with the police in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens on Sunday, was arrested on gun and drug possession charges.

The police have not behaved competently.
Fiction should not get to court.

Minnesota must try to make the situation whole.
It has not yet failed.

The Wrong Way to Count Prisoners

By including inmates in the population of the place where they are held, the Census Bureau is unfairly giving some voters more political power.

The Bureau of the Census is not responsible for the behavior of the states.
Prisoners are counted where they are held in forced residency.
The Legislatures should fix the imbalance.

Tensions Between Police and Blacks Are Likely to Worsen, Obama Says

The president will hold a town hall on Thursday devoted to addressing the growing tensions between race and law enforcement.

President Obama is correct.

When Police Use Lethal Robots

With little public scrutiny, police departments across the country have equipped themselves with robots.

The police must not indulge in assassination.

Judicial killing is done by the agents of the courts after trial and conviction.

First Case of Female-to-Male Transmission of Zika Is Recorded

The new evidence widens the pool of those at risk from the virus, which had been thought to pass only from men to women or between two men during sex.

A new sexually transmitted disease.

Researchers have questions to answer:
Is it chronic?
After "recovery" does genetic damage persist?
What is the transmission period?
Are asymptomatic cases infectious?

That will do for now.

Have the Dallas Police Improved? Depends on Whom You Ask

Though Chief David O. Brown has worked to steer his department away from a history of racism and abuse, black residents expressed a wide range of views of the police.

Belief and government policy are different things.
Reading and understanding government policy is a civic duty.

Too Old for Sex? Not at This Nursing Home

Recognizing that some residents have intimate relationships well into their 70s and 80s, the Hebrew Home at Riverdale now offers a happy hour, a senior prom and a dating service.

The old age homes I have seen depress me.

How the Headlights Rated

Even the best headlights didn’t always get passing grades in the insurance group’s test.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/15/automobiles/road-seems-dark-to-you-new-tests-blame-your-headlights.html

I find I am blinded by oncoming traffic.
Forbidding others the use of the roads is not a solution.
Lighting the rural roads is not acceptable.
Less powerful low beams and penalties for failure to dim is reasonable.

Closing Arguments Sound Familiar at 4th Trial in Freddie Gray Case

Prosecutors used the same narrative that failed to convict in three previous cases in arguing that Lt. Brian Rice had committed a crime during Mr. Gray’s arrest.

The prosecutors are not winning.

Race Relations Are at Lowest Point in Obama Presidency, Poll Finds

A New York Times/CBS News Poll indicates that relations between African-Americans and the police are so brittle that the attack that killed five officers in Dallas left many respondents unsurprised.

There is no direct causal link between president Obama and relations between blacks and the police.
The link is through the Republican party.
