Tribe in South Dakota Seeks Court Ruling Over Standoff on Blocking Virus

Mark Walker and Emily Cochrane at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 34 minutes ago
The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe set up checkpoints to limit the spread of the coronavirus. After the state objected, the White House got involved. Now the tribe has asked a federal judge to intervene.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakota_people#Government
"Tribal governments have significant leeway, as semi-autonomous political entities, in deviating from state law (e.g. Indian gaming). They are ultimately subject to supervisory oversight by the United States Congress[22] and executive regulation through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The nature and legitimacy of those relationships continue to be a matter of dispute.[26]
There appears little doubt that Gov. Kristi Noem acted improperly.
The question will go to court.
For now the state of North Dakota should be enjoined from acting against the tribal health and travel checks.

Trump, Out of Step

Lisa Lerer at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 34 minutes ago
The president’s message to his die-hard fans is increasingly at odds with how most Americans feel.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truth
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truth#Definition_and_etymology
"Thus, 'truth' involves both the quality of "faithfulness, fidelity, loyalty, sincerity, veracity",[6] and that of "agreement with fact or reality", in Anglo-Saxon expressed by sōþ (Modern English sooth)."
Trump has no concept of truth.
He is not alone.

Trump’s False Attacks on Voting by Mail Stir Broad Concern

Maggie Haberman, Nick Corasaniti and Linda Qiu at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 hour ago
The president’s assertions about widespread fraud have little or no basis in fact but are resonating with his supporters and give him the option of raising doubts about the legitimacy of the outcome.
I await Trump's explanation.

A Winner on Election Day in November? Don’t Count on It

Shane Goldmacher at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 hour ago
The lack of race results in New York and Kentucky this week is a prelude for the presidential election, as officials strain to deal with a deluge of absentee ballots and a jumble of voting deadlines.
The ballots will be cast.
There will be results.
The results will be anounced when they are known.
Certainty is a matter for religion.
I live with probability.

Noam Scheiber and Ron Lieber at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 10 hours ago
A proposed rule would keep plans from increasing risk or decreasing returns in pursuit of “a social or political end,” Secretary Eugene Scalia says. But others say existing law achieves that end.

The Trump administration tries to claim credit without taking action.

Do Not Ask Western Leadership to Fix Anything

Ian Welsh at Ian Welsh - 13 hours ago
References to Corbyn aside, this is as true as it was when I first published in, Nov 16, 2015. I was going to write a new article on trust in leadership, and I will, but I want to emphasize the basics first. Why are people calling for Western leaders to “fight terrorism”? Global deaths from […]

 Thinking is hard for leaders.
I am surprised when it shows.

If he were to win in the Republican-leaning district in November, Dr. Webb, 37, would become the first black physician to have a vote in Congress. He will face an opponent who has had trouble fund-raising.

Northern Virginia has been changing.
The Trump group would like to call it "The Deep State".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arlington_National_Cemetery#History

"Within weeks, his staff reported that Arlington Estate was the most suitable property in the area.[12] The property was high and free from floods (which might unearth graves), it had a view of the District of Columbia, and it was aesthetically pleasing. It was also the home of the leader of the armed forces of the Confederate States of America, and denying Robert E. Lee use of his home after the war was a valuable political consideration."
