Pence Will Control All Coronavirus Messaging From Health Officials

Michael D. Shear and Maggie Haberman at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 15 minutes ago
Government health officials and scientists will have to clear statements with the vice president’s office, one of three people designated as the administration’s primary coronavirus official.

So a guy who doesn't believe in science -- who has denied that smoking can kill you, or that condoms can protect you; who does not believe in evolution, or in climate change -- will now be vetting the statements of government scientists. Cool, cool.

The Justification For Great Wealth

Ian Welsh at Ian Welsh - 7 hours ago
Great wealth is great power. If you have money, many people will do what you want them to do. This should uncontroversial: most of us have spent our lives doing tasks we wouldn’t do if someone wasn’t giving us money, and we didn’t need the money because without it we would wind up on the […]

"Seems like the cost of having an overclass is rather high, isn’t it? Are they producing enough human welfare (any net human welfare?) to justify all that income they are taking?
When, of course, they actually crashed the economy in 2008 and when economic performance has been worse the less we’ve taxed them, rather than higher?
Anyway, is having this elite worth 50K a year to you?

Hope you’re getting your money’s worth."
