18 Candidates. 72 Hours. A Hectic Weekend at the Iowa State Fair.

Sarah Kerr, Ainara Tiefenthäler and Orlando De Guzman at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 4 hours ago
Democratic presidential candidates descended on Des Moines to meet prized Iowa caucus voters, spend time with their families and, of course, eat some food on a stick.

This does not look to be effective campaigning.
It is a necessary check box.
There are about six that did not show.

The Democratic field descended on the state, unofficially kicking off the fall campaign season.

The trade war is a disaster.

Maggie Haberman at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 12 hours ago
Mr. Whitaker, a Trump loyalist whose appointment to the Justice Department’s top job drew scrutiny from Democrats, has taken on a string of jobs since leaving the administration.

After El Paso Shooting, Will Voters Revisit Beto O’Rourke?

Katie Glueck at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 19 hours ago
The presidential candidate is back in the spotlight after a tragedy in a city that is core to his personal and political identity.

I can't guess Beto O'Rourke's prospects.
He must win some delegates to the Democratic party convention.

U.S. Fencer, Race Imboden, Takes a Knee at Pan-American Games

Derrick Bryson Taylor at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 19 hours ago
Racism, mistreatment of immigrants and a “president who spreads hate” were among the reasons he knelt, he said.

Give him his medal.

Why and When Good Wins

Ian Welsh at Ian Welsh - 9 minutes ago
We live in a degraded Age. This isn’t to pretend that what came before was good in all ways, but all too often we deny the power of good. We think evil is smart, so good loses. Or we deny that good and evil even exist, claiming they are spiritual or metaphysical constructs with no […]

Use just means.

Trump Administration Weakens Protections for Endangered Species

Lisa Friedman at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 hour ago
The Trump administration announced far-reaching revisions to the Endangered Species Act, which was first enacted in 1973.

This must not happen.
There will be multiple suits.

Trump Rule Targets Legal Immigrants Who Rely on Food Stamps and Other Aid

Eileen Sullivan and Michael D. Shear at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 2 hours ago
A new rule is part of a sweeping policy aimed to narrow the demographic of people who come to live and work in the United States.

Refuge is a right.
Trump is behaving unlawfully.
