Celebrities Behaving Well

The days of our unqualifiedly celebrating the rowdy, libidinous, self-destructive artist may be drawing to a close.

Big-Money Donors Demand Larger Say in Campaign Strategy

In both parties, elite donors who once deferred to “super PAC” leaders to determine the best use of their money are now taking a central role in shaping campaigns.

I suspect this is pointless speculation.
I hope the G.O.P. cause is lost.

Farm Bill Reflects Shifting American Menu and a Senator’s Persistent Tilling

Computer Searches at Center of Dispute on C.I.A. Detentions

An office is at the center of an escalating fight between the spy agency and its congressional overseers, and an investigation by the C.I.A.’s inspector general.
United States Politics and Government; Espionage and Intelligence Services; Detainees

"Senior lawmakers contend that C.I.A. officers conducted unauthorized searches of the computers used by committee staff members in an effort to learn how the committee gained access to the agency’s own 2009 internal review of the interrogation program. A chorus of Democratic senators on Wednesday said the C.I.A. had thwarted Congress’ constitutional role as overseer, suggested that federal laws may have been broken, and demanded answers from the Obama administration."

The C.I.A. has no right to secrets from congress and its agents.

Rio’s Race to Future Intersects Slave Past

With a building spree tearing apart sections of Rio de Janeiro, archaeological finds are giving new insight into its old role as a slave trade center.
Slavery; Archaeology; Olympic Games; Restoration and Renovation

"Brazil abolished slavery in 1888, making it the last country in the Americas to do so. Now the relatively relaxed approach to the archaeological discoveries is raising doubts about how willing the authorities are to revisit such aspects of Brazilian history.
“Archaeologists are exposing the foundations of our unequal society while we are witnessing a perverse attempt to remake the city into something resembling Miami or Dubai,” said Cláudio Lima Castro, an architect and scholar of urban planning. “We’re losing an opportunity to focus in detail on our past, and maybe even learn from it.”"

"Urban renewal equals negro removal".
