Developing Nations Lose Their Luster

Once seen as a necessity in portfolios, investments in countries like Brazil and Russia are being reassessed because of messy politics and flagging economies.
Currency; Third World and Developing Countries; Foreign Investments; US Dollar (Currency); Government Bonds

Relative changes are being mistaken for absolute changes.
The US is losing less quickly than the developing world.
The US is not pulling ahead.  The world is falling behind.

For Steve Russell, a Relaxing Post After Helping to Capture Saddam Hussein

Representative Steve Russell, Republican of Oklahoma, discussed his 21-year Army career and what motivated him to run for Congress.
Series; United States Politics and Government

"We find ourselves really at a tipping point of whether we want to protect our life, liberty and property or whether we want a big government to do that, and whether or not we can pay for it. And I didn’t want to look back on my life thinking that I might have been able to help our country at a certain point and didn’t try."

Steve Russell has his faith.
I have a different set of perceptions about the place of "Americans" in the world.
Theodore Roosevelt recognized that government must protect the public from rapacious business.  That perception is missing from Mr. Russell's universe.

How the Auto Bailout Helped Save the Economy

Alan Krueger and Austan Goolsbee, former chairmen of the Council of Economic Advisers in the Obama administration, explain how the bailout was a big part of averting economic catastrophe.
Automobiles; Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (2010); Emergency Economic Stabilization Act (2008); Gross Domestic Product; Gross National Product (GNP); Presidential Election of 2016; Recession and Depression; Unemployment; United States Economy

I don't know that the economy is saved.
It has had a stay of execution.
The economy may yet receive clemency.

http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/03/11/exporting-europes-stagnation/

. . ."What we actually see is almost three times that move, suggesting that the main driver here is the perception of permanent, or at any rate very long term European weakness. And that’s a situation in which Europe’s weakness will be largely shared with the rest of the world — Europe will have its fall cushioned by trade surpluses, but the rest of us will be dragged down by the counterpart deficits.
Now, this is not how most analysts approach the problem. They make a forecast for the exchange rate, then run this through some set of trade elasticities to get the effects on trade and hence on GDP. Such estimates currently indicate that the dollar will be a moderate-sized drag on US recovery, but no more. What the economic logic says, however, is that if that’s really true, the dollar will just keep heading higher until the drag gets less moderate."

End the Ethanol Rip-Off

The federal mandate to blend ethanol into gasoline hurts the environment — and costs billions.

The argument is specious.    https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/specious
The object of the ethanol addition is a knock suppressant.
The tetra ethyl lead must be kept out of the gasoline.
Our destination is the end of dominance for fossil carbon.
