I can see how they would be important to believing Roman Catholics.
Once faith is gone the details of faith become obscure.
The Pope must avoid schism. 
In most cases that means avoiding change.
The Pope can, if he is willing, clear away unworthy priests.
They can be assigned to cloistered monasteries if more public fates are destructive.
A life of prayer and stone cutting seems proper for some.
I do not need to see justice done.  I would like to know that it is done.
