Can a Playground Be Too Safe?
Efforts to regulate playground equipment to prevent injuries may stunt emotional development, a new study suggests.
My answer is yes to both questions.  Overprotecting children is every bit as bad as wilfully endangering them.  Likely over-protection is a form of wilful endangerment.  Domesticated animals do not do well in the wild.

Republicans Are Signing Away the Right to Govern
Republican candidates are signing pledges that undermine the basic principle of a democratic government.
The Republican party has learned demagoguery to perfection.

    TeenNick’s ’90s Nostalgia Fest
Teen Nick will start re-broadcasting some 1990s hits like “Doug,” in response to a groundswell of nostalgia on Facebook from fans who grew up with the shows.
The young always prefer the fashions they first encountered.  So do the old.
It is interesting that fashion changes.  I think the sales people get bored or need more income.  This way there ate many more similar things to fill the stores.

Swimming From Cuba to Key West, Without Leaving the Water
Diana Nyad, 61, aims to set a record by swimming across the shark-infested Straits of Florida in 60 hours.
I will get the book out of the library.  It is just another feat I did not and will not perform.

In the Ozarks, a Home With Room to Spare (72,000 Square Feet)
The building, called Pensmore, promises to be one of the largest residential homes in the country — 72,000 square feet that includes 13 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms and enough amenities to entertain a small city.
As much as you will pay for.   I will take apprentices.

Murdoch Aides Long Tried to Blunt Scandal Over Hacking
A small group of executives at News Corporation pursued strategies for years that had the effect of obscuring the extent of wrongdoing in Britain’s best-selling tabloid.
They are acting like cats in a bare room.

Radiation-Tainted Beef Spreads Through Japan’s Markets
Contaminated meat, which officials attribute to cattle that ate hay stored outside and exposed to radiation, has made its way to supermarkets and restaurants across Japan in recent weeks.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cesium#Isotopes
Radiation detection is very easy.  Calibrating and certifying detectors is harder.
An easy and available method is photographic emulsion.  Put the suspect meat on an Xray plate or a sheet of photographic paper for ten minutes and see if it fogs. if it does, the meat is radiologicly hot.
If no fog, no hot stuff

China, Largest Holder of U.S. Debt, Remains Tied to Treasuries
Beijing has too much invested in American debt to do much more but continue to buy and grumble.
The big box stores buy from China with dollars. The central bank of China grabs the dollars and issues Renambi, the local currency, at a fixed rate of exchange.  The Dollar is inflating slowly. They must be invested to protect their value.  Treasury bills are one of the few safe places to park Dollars.  Their investments are not their problem.  The value of their holdings is.

    The Road Not Taken
Where were the practical conservatives when the spending cuts were on the table?
    Just one long whine.
The conservatives have done their best by Grover Norquist's  ideal.
They have been embarrassingly effective and will regret it.

Human Rights and Belief in God

Without special creation there is only the privilege of power.
    That is enough.
Under other circumstances I as part of the food chain would feed another animal.
I am a rational inhabitant and know that other creatures have earned their places.
My and the human position are the privilege of power and can be lost.

Texas Study Raises Questions About Impact of School Discipline
A Texas study tracked nearly a million students from seventh grade into high school.
    Football does it for some.
I am not going to spend a lot of effort making humans out of Texans.
    The effort must be spent.
A start would be to make a better picture of the problem kids.
Are they one group or are they diverse?  If diverse, is there a commonality?  More than one?  I suspect racism.
