    Tax Soda, Subsidize Vegetables
Taxing junk food and making healthy food more affordable would save millions of lives and billions of dollars in health care costs.
Social engineering is usually left to the mercenary  politicians.
They all went to law school.

Make Way for the Radical Center
A third way is on the way for the 2012 presidential campaign. And its convention will be held on the Internet.
This is a distraction.  Our politicians seem to be determined to play Samson.

Addictive Personality? You Might be a Leader
What we seek in leaders is often the same risk-taking personality type that is found in addicts.
We hope the leaders learn faster than addicts.

    Republicans, Zealots and Our Security
Forget about Iran. These days, the most dangerous threat to national security comes from our own elected officials.
Nicholas Kristof is an astute observer.   If I could I would run away.

After Long Wait, Same-Sex Couples Marry in New York
Hundreds of couples began marrying on Sunday in a new milestone for gay rights.
Equality is still a distant goal.
Sooner is better.    As soon as you can is best.

    Using 14th Amendment to Raise
A Civil War-era provision in the 14th Amendment makes for an interesting discussion on whether President Obama could use it to unilaterally raise the debt ceiling.
The debt ceiling unconstitutional when applied in this fashion.  It is not to be raised but removed.  That would be legally but not politically possible.

Killings in Norway Spotlight Anti-Muslim Thought in U.S.
The man accused of the killing spree in Norway was deeply influenced by anti-Muslim bloggers and right-wing activists in the U.S., lacing his 1,500-page manifesto with quotations from them.
The advertising on this has brought careful attention to the manifesto.
The result will not please the advertiser.

How the Deficit Got This Big
A look at how the economy went from healthy surpluses at the end of the Clinton era to the current deficit.
The shrub went on a spending spree.  Cleaning up is costing us.

Parties Push for Debt-Limit Deal Before Asian Markets Open
Speaker John A. Boehner said that the House was prepared to act on its own deficit reduction package if Congress and the White House failed to agree on a bipartisan plan.
They blew that deadline.  It has not mattered much yet.
Europe is winning the default race.

The Master’s as the New Bachelor’s
Call it credentials inflation. A four-year degree may not cut it anymore.
Entry level positions are a distant memory.

Apple Sales in China Zoom Ahead of Competitors
Must-have gadgets are causing a stir, with stores packed and inventory sparse.
There is more to this story than is published here.
The Software can be pirated as can the hardware.  The key must be the support system.
I don't understand why there is not a Pear or Peach store.

California next.  Republican control has a high price.

Oslo Suspect Cultivated Parallel Life to Disguise ‘Martyrdom Operation’
When Anders Behring Breivik, the suspect, was not plotting mass murder, he was busy playing video games and blogging, listening to Euro pop and watching episodes of “True Blood.”
I doubt there was any malice in his second life.

Start-Up Handles Social Media Background Checks
A start-up helps companies dig into potential employees’ activity online, from Facebook posts to e-commerce usage.
This business model is all about rejecting applicants.
It feels like pandering to me.

Do not waste your time.  This has not worked since 1860.
T.R. and William Jennings Bryan made efforts but had no real successes.

Why Tyrants Love the Murdoch Scandal
When those who pride themselves on their freedoms fail to live up to their ideals, there can be consequences in other places.
It demonstrates that nothing is fool proof.  The fools are very clever.

Deep Below Park Avenue, a 200-Ton Drill at Rest
A gargantuan cutter head that has been hollowing out tunnels for a train station under Grand Central Terminal will be buried, dormant and decayed, in Midtown Manhattan.
Cost benefit analysis strikes again.   This thing will live on in legend.

Scandal Splinters the Murdoch Family Business
The phone hacking scandal could threaten Rupert Murdoch’s plans of succession and his family’s control over News Corporation.

I like it when The Times agrees with me.
