Down from the mountains.  Nice to get away from that Laptop.  There is no Linux driver for the WiFi in it.

Can’t Eliminate an Invasive Species? Try Eating It.
While most invasive species are not popularly regarded as edible food, that is mostly a matter of marketing, experts say.
Most of the meadow grasses are European along with the earth worms.

    The Unemployed Somehow Became Invisible
In past downturns, Americans demanded politicians’ attention. But this time, the nation’s jobless are mostly just enduring.
Propaganda efforts can be very effective.  This one has been in place for many years.

Vocational Schools Face Deep Cuts in Federal Funding
Federal funding for vocational and technical education is at risk, but such courses may keep disengaged high school students on an academic path and raise their future earnings.
This entry level work is what the Chinese buy from us.
Selling it is why there are no experienced creative people coming along.
Such people have been the strength of the American economy.
Big business has no place for them so they rust and confuse journalists like this one.
The two cultures model has not worked out for Great Britain.
It will not work out here.
It will be very hard to get over it.

The Worst Time to Slow the Economy
June’s bleak job numbers should change the conversation in the debt-limit talks.
We know.  Glad to see that the Times knows too.  I doubt we will see change soon.

U.S. Is Deferring Millions in Pakistani Military Aid
The cancellation of hundreds of millions in aid is meant to chasten Pakistan for expelling American trainers and press its army to fight militants more effectively.
The Taliban are their relatives fighting for Islam as they understand it.
This just frees them of most restraint.

Bringing Therapists to Patients, via the Web
Psychiatry through a video connection was pioneered several decades ago. Today, start-up companies are trying to popularize therapy over the Internet.
Profitable insurance companies collect fees and provide no service.
This is not a model of therapy.
Health care is still under discussion.

    In Defense of Antidepressants
It’s all the rage to question their effectiveness. But critics don’t understand the research.
Just because the advertisers got it wrong does not mean there are no real effects.  Treatments must change with understanding. At this point they do not.

Science to Art, and Vice Versa - Prototype
A sculptor and a lighting artist have very different techniques but the same goal: to promote understanding by finding new ways of seeing the world.
I have never loved the magic act.  Here the better it works, the better it is. Organic chemists are taught to play with models.  Building the molecule teaches the possible variations and gives some idea of the stability of the isomers.  Virtual reality probably does that less well.

Lead Gen Sites Pose Challenge to Google - the Haggler
Lead generation companies are crushing some local merchants in search results, presenting a real challenge for Google.
The solution I know is to leave a key with a neighbour or other trusted person. Alternatively find a local person and keep the number were it will not be lost with the key.

The Author of ‘Fear of Flying’ Detects a Backlash Against Sex.
Modern lust focuses less on carnal pleasure than on control.
The ghost of Victoria has returned.  We have spent thirty years re-instilling the fear of sex.  We should not be shocked at our success.
The importance of stability in child rearing is another talking point.
Stability has more than one meaning.  Dickens gets into people.

British Tabloids’ Sting Kept Many Politicians Pliant
Fear of media harassment and political necessity have long underpinned the uneasy collusion between British politicians and the nation’s tabloids.
“All these years, he’s been a tycoon, a media mogul — and now it’s as if he’s suddenly become Citizen Kane.”  To be as Hearst has been Murdoch's life ambition.  He has had to make his own money.

The Best School $75 Million Can Buy
Chris Whittle once tried to remake public education. Now, with a new for-profit school, he says he’ll do the same for private education. Should parents believe him?
Remediation is very costly but these parents can afford it.  There is no better place to experiment.  We could well lose a generation we can spare.
