@22:47, 07/17/11 8

We experienced a power glitch in the afternoon heat.  It took down my system.

British Police Arrest Rebekah Brooks in Phone Hacking
The move came two days after Rebekah Brooks quit as chief executive at News International and just before she is scheduled to testify with Rupert and James Murdoch before a parliamentary panel.
This really does seem to be collapsing News Corp.

How the Bursting of the Consumer Bubble Continues to Hold the Economy Back
We are living through a tremendous bust. It isn’t simply a housing bust. It’s a fizzling of the great consumer bubble that was decades in the making.
We can exit this mess tomorrow.
We just have to spend the money where it counts, at the bottom.
There is no requirement that government make a profit.

    Our Broken Escalator
The best antipoverty investment in the world — from New York to Nigeria — is education. So why do we keep cutting it?

The children might eat of the tree of knowledge and become . . .

    The Clash of Generations
In America and in Greece, the baby boomers may not be up to fixing the problem they have caused.
Blame the victim seems to work every time.

An Alarming New Stimulant, Sold Legally in Many States
Doctors say the new drug that people are calling “bath salts,” which has proliferated in recent months, has unusually dangerous and long-lasting effects.
My observation is really bad drugs exit the system.
"Accidental" deaths are not tolerated by anyone.

Law School Economics - Job Market Weakens, Tuition Rises
Despite fewer high-paying jobs, students continue to pour into law school. And the schools keep charging higher tuition and admitting more students.
Raising the price until the demand drops to only clear the supply is classic economics.

    When Your E-Mail Goes Unanswered
Is it technological failure that causes some e-mails to go unanswered? The youth of the receiver, perhaps? Experts say it’s more likely to be a lack of courtesy.
Consider me courtesy challenged.  I do check regularly.  There are only so many hours in a day and there is a world with demands.
I am probably thicker than I should be.  Try more, I have not understood.

E-Book Revolution Upends Columbia Publishing Course
A six-week, $6,990 crash course in a fast-changing publishing industry at Columbia attracts more eager applicants than it can accommodate.

David Sacks of Yammer on Fostering Dissent - Corner Office
David Sacks, the founder and chief of Yammer, says the democratic nature of a start-up should include ample room for employees to debate the direction and operation of the company.
A company is not ultimately a democracy.

    Books and Other Fetish Objects
As the raw material of history is digitized, some of the mystery is lost.
There is information in the object that is not to be found in the image of the object.  I give you Palimpsest. I give you penemento. I give you erasure ghosts. Under painting.  The entirety of art restoration and xray imaging. Spoils found in the binding.  Two sided canvases and whitewashed frescoes. All of archaeology.
There is more than the image of the text.  More text is more and I honour the effort.  The Americans win this contest.

    Lawmakers, Armed and Dangerous
Did a lawmaker intentionally point her loaded .380 Ruger at a newspaper reporter, or was it just a misunderstanding?
There is not much misunderstanding a .380 Ruger.  It only says BANG!

Testimony and new evidence indicate that Scotland Yard and News International became so intertwined that they wound up sharing the goal of containing the phone-hacking investigation.
