House Republicans Try to Roll Back Environmental Rules
Republicans have loaded a House appropriations bill with provisions to severely curtail environmental oversight.
    Just kill it.

Spotify Unshackles Online Music - David Pogue
This month, via Spotify, the music world took a great step forward toward the holy grail of a free, legal, song-specific and convenient service.
It looks good from here.  I still don't want to bother with a play list.
I will stick with radio and radio station websites.  www.kxzi.com at the moment. www.wnyc.org most of the time.  They bought wqxr. a while back.

In Test Tube, Hint of Chemicals Coming Alive
Chemists and biologists are trying to generate the Frankensteinian spark that will jump the gap separating the inanimate and the animate.
That would do the science.  Give it to the engineers.

Dress Codes in New York Clubs: Will This Get Me In?
If clubs turn you away at the door, maybe your shirt or shoes are to blame.
Dress uniforms are back.  The Republicans are in charge.

    Washington’s Rogue Elephants
There are limits to the usual assumptions when it comes to the current debt negotiations.
"In the 1983 movie “WarGames,” an errant military supercomputer has a final moment of lucidity in which it notes, “The only winning move is not to play.” The president is best advised to do the same: declare that the other side has foregone all pretense at rational legitimacy, and simply proceed to govern as best he can for the good of the country."

    Can’t We Do This Right?
While the Republicans and Democrats remain at a stalemate, let’s look at a way to approach the debt problem properly.
There is very little "Government Fat" to be trimmed.
What we need to do is get people earning.  To do that we must spend on employment.  The private sector does not wish to employ more people.  The public sector must employ them.  It would be better if that employment made the world a better place for all of us.

Amy Winehouse, Bad Girl With a Touch of Genius
Amy Winehouse created music that made others take notice, and looks that gave even bad girls pause.
I don't know her music and I don't know her at all.

Credit Agency Tells Congress a Default Is Unlikely
    "Correction: July 27, 2011
An earlier version of this article incorrectly said that officials from two credit rating agencies said the United States was unlikely to default."

Not O.K. at the O.K. Corral
The final frontier of debt negotiations has left Americans plumb tired of all that government.
Maureen Dowd Loves to watch the fights.
SF knows that "faster than light" is fantasy.  I am not at all sure congress knows that.
Maureen Dowd has some trouble with reality.

Allies of Medical Device Makers Attack a Study Sight Unseen
There are facts and there are opinions.
    Do not confuse them.
    Leave that to their lawyers.
The facts are against the device makers.
No weight of opinion can change that.
    Rule them out.

The Hiring Bias Against the Unemployed - Room for Debate
Should employers be allowed to discard a résumé because the applicant is not currently working?
Assume that employable people are employed.
This is standard in Republican circles.
The compliment of the first assumption is people not working are not employable.
The observed condition is an unavoidable vicious cycle.
Federal employment has been an exit from it in the past.

Israeli and Palestinian Women Take a Rare Trip to the Beach
A group of Israeli women risked criminal prosecution by taking Palestinians from the West Bank to swim in the sea — most of whom had never seen the ocean before.
A wonderful action that will make no real difference.   Enjoy.

Once Unthinkable, Breakup of Big Banks Now Seems Feasible
What was made can be unmade.
The breakup of the big banks will happen but it will not be voluntary.
At a guess it will come soon after the next election.

    There will be continuing efforts.
