Amy Winehouse Found Dead in London, Police Say
The police said that the death at the home in Camden Square was being treated as unexplained.
There will be an inquest.  I am not that concerned.

Norway Shooting and Bomb Attack Leaves at Least 91 Dead
The man charged with the attacks in Oslo that killed at least 92 people left behind a detailed manifesto calling for a Christian civil war to defend Europe against the threat of Muslim domination, officials said.
Strike at your enemy.  Neutrals can become allies.
The man was nuts.  Enemies are not in the phone book.

Amy Winehouse, British Soul Singer, Dies at 27
The British singer who found worldwide fame with a smoky, hip-hop-inflected take on retro soul was found dead in her home in London on Saturday.
Waiting for information.  She was not a power for me.  She may be in the future.  The memorial bits today were interesting.

    Tax Soda, Subsidize Vegetables
Taxing junk food and making healthy food more affordable would save millions of lives and billions of dollars in health care costs.
    I like this program.

Lawmakers Renew Push to Reach Deal on Cutting Deficit
Hoping to reassure markets, Congressional leaders raced to reach a new deficit-reduction deal that Speaker John A. Boehner said could cut $3 trillion to $4 trillion in spending over 10 years.
Not going to pass.  I think they will have to think and that will be very hard for them.

    Republicans, Zealots and Our Security
Forget about Iran. These days, the most dangerous threat to national security comes from our own elected officials.
    I am not alone.

Obama Should Raise the Debt Ceiling on His Own
If Congress won’t deal with him, President Obama should raise the debt ceiling unilaterally.
    Not yet.

Call it credentials inflation. A four-year degree may not cut it anymore.

    The Great Evil
The current political environment and the debt-crisis debate are stranger than science fiction. Remember the 1997 movie “The Fifth Element.”
I did not see this film.
I will not see this film unless it is demanded of me.
I have dealt with two year olds.
This crisis does not seem at all strange.
My expectations of Republican politicians are very low.

Joel Klein, Ex-Schools Chief, Leads Internal News Corp. Inquiry
Joel Klein, who joined the News Corporation in January, initially opposed an internal probe into phone hacking. Now he is leading it.
If things are as I think they are the internal probe will be deadly to the company.   The probe will help some of the people survive.

The Republican Party Can’t Say Yes
Republicans claim that financial responsibility and debt reduction are priorities, but they have rejected yet another budget deal.

      http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/07/23/naked-blackmail/

"It turns out that in the final stages of the debt negotiations, Republicans suddenly added a new demand — a trigger that would end up eliminating the individual mandate in health care reform.
This is telling, in a couple of ways.
First, the health care mandate has nothing to do with debt and deficits. So this is naked blackmail: the GOP is trying to use the threat of financial catastrophe to impose its policy vision, even in areas that have nothing to do with the issue at hand, a vision that it lacks the votes to enact through normal legislation.
Second, this is a demand Obama can’t accept, unless he plans on changing his party registration. Health reform doesn’t work without a mandate (remember the primary? Maybe better not to). And if health reform is undermined, Obama will have achieved nothing. So by adding this demand, Republicans were in effect saying no deal — unless, I guess, they believed that Obama is a total pushover.
      Awesome."             PK

What Apple Has That Google Doesn’t: An Auteur
While Google makes its design choices by consensus, Apple has found success by relying on the eye of Steve Jobs, whose role resembles that of a film auteur.
      Google does quite well.
I would rather work with an engineered product that works than a zap product with issues.  I have not been happy with Apple.  It is well done but rigid.  I probably have not spent enough attention on it.

Hulu, Billed as Tomorrow’s TV, Looks Boxed In Today
Hulu has helped to free television from the tyranny of the TV set, but questions about how to make money off online content pose a challenge to the Web site’s future and eventual buyer.
Advertising did it for so many things.  I don't see how this can be a question.  Ronco and Popiele will throw money on anything with an audience.

A third way is on the way for the 2012 presidential campaign. And it’s convention will be held on the Internet.

Not real likely.  I will not vote for a candidate that can't win.  There will be plenty of primaries before I need to decide.
Primaries seem to be the forgotten choice.

At Least 80 Dead in Norway Shooting
A gunman stalked youths at an island summer camp for young members of the governing party after explosions in Oslo hit government buildings. The police seized a man officials described as a right-wing extremist in connection with both attacks.
He seems to have done it.  Reports are still quite confused.  His skills were not well developed.
