Another Top Police Official Resigns in British Scandal
“Another Top Police Official Resigns in British Scandal - http://nyti.ms/qAFXCz”
http://query.nytimes.com/search/sitesearch?date_select=full&query=phone+hacking&type=nyt&x=16&y=7
http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/n/news_of_the_world/index.html?scp=4&sq=phone%20hacking&st=cse"By the fall, fresh revelations spilled out about News Corporation’s questionable practices. In November, the company acknowledged that News of the World had hired a private investigator to conduct surveillance of two lawyers representing phone hacking victims. The scandal also spread to another Murdoch tabloid, The Sun, when a journalist was arrested on suspicion of making illegal payments to police officers.
Other new developments:
Dec. 20
● A government inquiry into the behavior of the British press conducted a transatlantic interrogation of Piers Morgan, a former editor of the tabloid The Daily Mirror and a talk-show host on CNN. Testifying through a video link from the United States, where he is now based, Mr. Morgan was questioned about journalists’ behavior at The Mirror, which he edited for nearly a decade until 2004. Asked if any telephone hacking by journalists had occurred during his tenure, he repeated earlier denials of such wrongdoing. Mr. Morgan also asserted that all Daily Mirror journalists were obliged in their employment contracts to work within the law.
Dec. 13
● An e-mail chain released by a parliamentary panel investigating the phone hacking scandal shows that James Murdoch received and responded to messages in 2008 that referred to widespread phone hacking at News of the World, the first documentation that he may have been notified of the wider problem long before he has admitted. Mr. Murdoch responded to the panel in a letter, saying that he had opened the e-mails on his BlackBerry and had not read their full contents at the time or since.
Dec. 7
● British police arrested a 41-year-old man in connection with the phone hacking scandal that has rocked Rupert Murdoch’s media empire. British news media identified the man as Glenn Mulcaire, a private investigator once employed by News of the World, who was jailed in 2007 for hacking the phones of the British royal family. It is the 18th arrest since inquiries intensified last January.
Nov. 29
● The Guardian newspaper reported that the scandal had broadened significantly into areas of national security, with the police investigating whether private detectives working for the Murdoch media empire hacked into the computer of a cabinet minister and other senior officials responsible for Northern Ireland. Scotland Yard declined to comment on the report."
There is not a lot of interest in picking this apart. When it is all in a final report it will bring down the government.

The money in New York likes to bet on sure things. Silicon Valley is much more adventurous. The move away from engineering toward design is not a happy development for them.

To truly understand Borges, we may need to read Robert Louis Stevenson — as he himself did, obsessively.
I will read Borges when there is more slack in my life.

Does IMF Stand for Impressive Macroeconomic Flexibility?
So the IMF is holding a meeting on rethinking macroeconomic policy (I was invited but couldn’t make the timing work.) And the Fund’s chief economist has already made it clear that he’s open to some serious revision of the prevailing paradigm.
The markets were closed again today.
The news was not good.
