Study Finds Low Incomes Constrain Half of World

“Even those newly minted as middle class enjoy a standard of living that is modest by Western norms,” the report pointed out.

I did not know so few are desperate.

Should I Respond to My Mechanic’s Racist Poster?

The Ethicists consider when and how to call out another person’s prejudice.

I have difficulty dealing with my own prejudices.
"Dog whistle politics" are intentionally cryptic.

The Ethicists are dodging the problem as am I.
I have not made or displayed such posters.

Illinois: In Absence of Budget, Judge Denies Workers Full Pay

Illinois will not be allowed to pay state workers in full during a budget impasse, a Cook County judge ruled Tuesday, leaving some 65,000 employees without a paycheck.

It may be necessary to remove the Governor of Illinois.

New York City Introduces Bail Reform Plan for Low-Level Offenders

The program is aimed at keeping defendants who are deemed to be a low risk out of the Rikers Island jail complex, placing them under court supervision as they await trial.

It is still a stopgap measure.

The problem is in aesthetics which are mistakenly labeled morals.

Principal to Be Fired Over Investigation Into Grade-Fixing at a Brooklyn School

An inquiry found that a principal let students make up credits in classes where they received no substantial instruction and, in some cases, were not required to have contact with teachers.

Michael Bloomberg owes these teachers and administrators for the destruction of their careers.

A Philadelphia Workplace, With Millennials in Mind

A downtown distribution center is being remade into commercial space designed for a “live-work-play” lifestyle close to restaurants and entertainment.

What industrial startups seek are Jane Jacobs' "inhabited ruins".
This effort does not appear to be such a space.
The developers are seeking a stage between startup and company town.
That stage locates in the suburbs and staffs with reverse commutes.

Urban development seems to have changed.
Industries go to the workers rather than bringing the workers to the industry.

Why Is the Federal Government Afraid of Fat?

Despite a growing body of evidence in favor of fat in our diets, government policy continues to press against it.

The government hires trained people to do defined jobs.
They have done so traditionally.
There was an hiatus in F.D.R.'s administration.
Educated people were hired to solve vaguely defined problems.
They were often successful at the price of a change in  traditional aesthetics.

Health foods are a protoscientific concept that is enduring a cultural change.
The idea is not wrong but the practice has become wrong as we learn more about the biochemistry of nutrition.

Mother Recalls Last Breath of Slain Boy, 1, as Trial Begins

Cherisse Miller wept on the stand as the two young men accused in the 2013 fatal shooting of her son Antiq Hennis, 1, went on trial in State Supreme Court in Brooklyn.

The pain of Cherisse Miller should have nothing to do with the prosecution of the two accused killers.

F.B.I. Investigating 2013 Fatal Police Shooting in Florida

The investigation into the death of Jermaine McBean, who was photographed as he lay dying, was revealed in court records filed on Tuesday.

I do not like the aesthetics found in Florida.
I support a change in those aesthetics.

The Hero and the Nazi

The lives of two old men from opposing sides in World War II offer invaluable moral lessons.

I am troubled.

I find the basis of morality in aesthetics.
Morality is therefor relative though no less powerful.

A Colorado Coal Mining Town Struggles to Define Its Future

Tighter regulations, environmental lawsuits and a pivot toward cleaner-burning natural gas have knocked communities like Somerset, Colo., on their heels.

Though the people there love it, the town has no excuse.
It is an inhabited ruin.

New York City to Allow Visits to Grave Sites on Hart Island

The city settled a lawsuit brought on behalf of families of people buried in the potter’s field and will run monthly visits for relatives and their guests.

There is nothing to see in a potters field.
There are survey monuments to show where the filled and refilled trenches were
The record of what clay went where is elsewhere.
The worms in the well turned earth leave nothing identifiable.
"We bring nothing into the world and take nothing out of it."
Let the clay rest.

Girls in Juvenile Facilities Often Abused, Report Says

As many as 80 percent of the girls in some states’ juvenile justice systems have been sexually or physically abused, and facilities lack the means to address their trauma.

After Health Care Act, Sharp Drop in Spending on Birth Control

A new analysis found out-of-pocket spending on the pill dropped by about half in the first six months of 2013 compared with a year earlier.

"The Affordable Care Act requires insurance plans to cover the full cost of preventive services, including prescription contraception. The mandate for contraception began in August 2012, and insurers were supposed to comply by the beginning of new plan periods, which for many women was Jan. 1, 2013."
