The Real Problem With Medical Internships

It’s not the long hours. It’s the scut work and heavy patient loads.

The whole problem needs understanding.
The interns are learning.
The hospital is treating patients and billing.
The docs are teaching and dealing with problems that are beyond the skills of the interns.
Management is mostly a statistical problem.
Supplies must be replaced as they are used.  A good picture of supply use is levels at the stock room if unused stock is returned and replaced in batches in batches.
Aging supplies are sent where they will be soonest used
Supplies are billed by treatment. Some use more some use less.  Bill at the mean.
Nursing probably works the same way.
Intern shifts should be relatively short.  They should be extensible to deal with urgencies. staggered start times would be good.
The docs will have to lecture more.

a start to the plan.

Court Allows N.Y.U. Expansion Plan to Go Forward

New York State’s Court of Appeals upheld a lower-court ruling, most likely ending a long battle over the plan, which would add four buildings in Greenwich Village.

"Society for Historic Preservation, said his organization was consulting its lawyers about any other legal recourse that might stop or alter the expansion. “We’re already suffering from an extreme over-concentration of N.Y.U.-related uses,” Mr. Berman said. “Thousands of additional people and millions of additional square feet of construction is eventually going to make the Village feel like a company town.”"
