No Jail Term for Threats Against a Muslim Man

Bernhard Laufer, who emailed a death threat to the head of an Islamic nonprofit organization, was sentenced to supervised release, though he faces charges of attempted murder in an unrelated case.

Most religious education is a danger to the student and to others.

"At his federal plea hearing in March, Mr. Laufer said that he had exhibited symptoms of bipolar disorder or manic-depressive illness for 40 years and that he suffered from other depressive disorders.
“Mr. Laufer clearly needs medical treatment,” Alexander E. Eisemann, his lawyer, said on Tuesday after the sentencing hearing.
Much of Mr. Laufer’s federal case has revolved around details over where and how he would receive treatment for his mental illness.
“There are so few appropriate facilities available,” Judge Raymond J. Dearie said in court.
Mr. Awad agreed with the decision to provide Mr. Laufer medical treatment, saying mental health issues were on the rise and could not be ignored."
