Concerns Grow About 'Severely Polluted' Water in China's Cities

China's other major pollution problem - degradation of its water supply - is drawing increasing attention from environmentalists, and investors.

This is a nineteenth century view.  Water recycling is not much a part of it.

Europe's Rift Over Overfishing and Subsidies

As Europe wrestles with the issue of overfishing, it might be hard to dismantle subsidies that keep unprofitable boats going after ever fewer fish.
Conservation of Resources; Fishing, Commercial; Legislatures and Parliaments;

The only thing that will help fish stocks is many fewer fishermen.
This proposed legislation does not address the lack of fish.

How Not to Fix Climate Change

Stopping the Keystone XL oil pipeline is actually counterproductive in more ways than one.

In China, Families Bet It All on College for Their Children

Millions of Chinese sacrifice heavily for their children’s education, but as graduates saturate the job market, the security they seek is increasingly elusive.

A Great Debate

Is there a way to make genuine debates, in which politicians must do more than just repeat talking points, part of our political culture?
Debates (Political); Philosophy; Speeches and Statements; United States Politics and Government;

I would insist on fact checking.
Unsupported opinion no matter how firmly held should never defeat statements of fact.
Shared opinion remains opinion.

Don’t Blink, or You’ll Miss Another Bailout

A deal involving Bank of America that came to light recently shows how bank bailouts have continued, even if in a much quieter form than in the depths of the financial crisis.
Banking and Financial Institutions; Mortgage-Backed Securities; Subprime Mortgage Crisis;

If the N.Y. Fed were to pursue these claims and collect they would have to
make the banks whole afterwards to maintain a functioning banking system.
That would be more expensive and stink more.
I would rather have a systemic crisis later than sooner.  The bank and AIG are brain dead but the unwind should be orderly.
