Should I Become a Woman and Risk Causing Pain to My Wife and Children?

A father wonders whether to reveal his sexual identity, and the Ethicist has second thoughts on bees.
Bees; Ethics (Personal); Gender; Marriages;

I wonder if there are not more than one form of gay.
We know men who want to be with men as men.  Gender makes little difference. We know of people who want to be of the sex they were not born with in appearance or in fact.  None of this interferes with the formation of pair bonds.  Pair bonds deserve the protection of marriage.
Marriage cannot make a pair bond immortal.  When the bond dies I and much of the world feel that the marriage should die.  U.S. law does not allow the support of children to die with the bond and the marriage before the child reaches official adulthood.
The question transforms to "Are you willing to deal with the potential consequences of such an act?".
The wife and children and the state cannot control you.
Only you can control yourself.

Genomic Analysis, the Office Edition

A new computer, made by a company called Knome, is the size of a file cabinet and can filter a person’s genetic information, possibly yielding insights into cancer or other diseases.
Genetics and Heredity; Computers and the Internet; DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid); Laboratories and Scientific Equipment; New Models, Design and Products;
This is an analytic engine.  Just a big fast computer.
What is interesting is that file transfers between private URLs have an expectation of privacy.  It is only when they sit on a public ISP that they can be peaked at.
The privacy fight is much smaller than the news would lead one to believe.

N.F.L. Joins With G.E. in Effort to Detect Concussions

Fish Toxin Cited as Cause of Poisonings in ’10 and ’11

A report highlights the work done by New York agencies to trace the origin of 28 outbreaks and stem further spread of ciguatera, a type of fish poisoning.
Seafood; Fish and Other Marine Life; Food Contamination and Poisoning;

The FDA can test for the toxin.
Probably the best we can do this year is regulate a warning label on reef fish.

Nips and Tucks and Big Budget Cuts

An economist suggests that so-called budget sequestration — government spending cuts — could actually help the nation’s economy, if the right kind of cuts are made.
United States Economy; Federal Budget (US); United States Defense and Military Forces; Medicare; Health Insurance and Managed Care; Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (2010); Crop Controls and Subsidies;

How Do You Prevent Food Waste?

Up to half of all food produced for human consumption is thrown away. What do you do about it?
Food; Population; Supermarkets and Grocery Stores;

Charge more and grow less.
Most of the waste is of food too cheap to sell.
At a higher price more would go to local markets.
The hungry are hungry because they have not the money to buy.
Get the hungry incomes and they will stop being hungry.

Tribal Battles Displace Thousands in Darfur

Fighting that broke out last month between two Arab tribes in the Jebel Amir gold mining area has displaced around 100,000 people, United Nations officials said.
Mines and Mining; Refugees and Displaced Persons; International Relations;

The Arabs in the Sudan are the decedents of slave traders.
These desert thieves have no inherent rights in any of this territory.
I would not shoot them out of hand but I see no reason to support either side.
Perhaps the best scheme is to give some support to the loosing side so as to extend the fight.

The Boys at the Back

Boys are being left behind in educational advancement. We need to address the reasons.
Discrimination; Education (K-12); Gender; Men and Boys; Tests and Examinations;

"(T)he proper corrective to chauvinism is not to reverse it and practice it against males, but rather basic fairness. And fairness today requires us to address the serious educational deficits of boys and young men. The rise of women, however long overdue, does not require the fall of men."

no mind left or it may be when there is no hope for another end of pain.
I will tell you when it is time, I hope.  I also hope you will tell me when it is time for you.  The durable healthcare proxy is an under-appreciated feature of marriage.
