Playing for Lenny: Musicians Recall the ‘Magical’ Bernstein

He could be flamboyant or restrained. Furious or loving. Players from several orchestras recall what it was like to be conducted by Leonard Bernstein.

As Trade War Intensifies, China Moves to Bolster Its Economy

Weak growth puts Beijing at a disadvantage in dealing with the White House. But more spending and lending could worsen the country’s addiction to debt.

California Today: The Human Element in California’s Wildfires

Thursday: How people start or exacerbate blazes, a sudden opportunity for Duncan Hunter’s challenger, and a teetotaler’s guide to Sonoma County.

The reporting is confused.
There are at least four different and conflicting interest groups in California forest management.
Timber wants trees to harvest.
Building wants space and roads for houses.
The Forest services want healthy woods and streams.
The Tree Huggers want apparent wilderness.

The timber interests will want roads and big trees.
They will view fire as a problem and will raise the fire risk.
Roads bring unskilled people.
Builders want space and urban services for houses.
Houses are not forest and are full of unskilled people.
The forest services know now that California should burn
often with low fires that remove brush, weeds, and dead wood.  These fires have been suppressed.  They are now nearly impossible because the fuel load is enough to trigger a crown fire.  After a burn controlled burning should be done to prevent catastrophic burning.
The Tree Hugger faction want no change in the dynamic system that is forest.  No change is a formula for continued catastrophy.

How One Silicon Valley C.E.O. Masters Work-Life Balance

Chris O’Neill, of Evernote, makes a list every night, stays fit, blocks out his workweek by theme and listens to his children.

I am interrupt driven these days.
It is not planned or efficient.

By the Book: George Pelecanos

The crime novelist and screenwriter George Pelecanos, whose new book is “The Man Who Came Uptown,” would want Gladys Knight to write his life story: “Music heads will get that one.”

I have thought of Gladys Knight as a performer rather than a writer.

The actress Margaret Judson writes about working with a new ally on set, who’s in charge of keeping sex scenes steamy — and the actors feeling safe.

Good enough.

The film industry is thinking about art beyond penetration.

Sun Coach Curt Miller Aims for Honesty With Team and Family

I love all of you.
