Daily Report: Facebook Takes Aim at YouTube’s Video Dominance

Google-owned YouTube has been the internet’s go-to destination for both viewers and would-be stars. Now it’s getting some competition from the leading social network.

I am resisting FaceBook.
I am not alone.

Video: Follow Donald Trump Jr.’s Russia Email Trail

Donald Trump Jr. received an email on June 3, 2016, promising dirt on Hillary Clinton. The information was described as being part of Russia's support for his father’s presidential bid. His reply? “I love it.”

Donald Trump jr. became guilty when he took the bait.

My Grandmother’s Shroud

Her death prompted a search for her in photographs — our reservoirs of memory, our talismans of mourning.

When Is Speech Violence?

Brain science distinguishes verbal abusiveness from mere offensiveness.

"By all means, we should have open conversations and vigorous debate about controversial or offensive topics. But we must also halt speech that bullies and torments. From the perspective of our brain cells, the latter is literally a form of violence."

Mature judgment is required.

The point is to introduce points of view with effective counter arguments.
There is an assumption of accepted orthodoxy that should not be threatened by missionary efforts.
Rallies and camp meetings have a place.  It is not on the campus.  Students should be encouraged to attend such events and bring their content up for dissection on campus.
Politics is a subject and not an object of campus life.

Love Letter to My Future Surrogate

You won’t have to change diapers, calm fussiness or warm bottles: For nine months I’d like to borrow your womb.

If this is  your mind I will be enabling.

We will need to find an endowment for the potential child.
It will grow old without us.
I have met late children.
Their lives are difficult.

Daily Report: The Treasure Found in Email

The Donald Trump Jr. flap is a reminder of the perils of hard-to-erase email, but its transparency could be missed if everyone switches to secure communications channels.

All persons are not of public interest
Many secure communication systems leave a recoverable record.  If immortality is desired leave a cipher key with your executor.

Video: The Blackout of 1977: A Trip Through the Archives

It's been 40 years since the New York City blackout of 1977. Visit the New York Times archive — known as the morgue — to see how this newspaper covered two chaotic days.

Yes, pictures are durable.

Two years are enough to be alone and living deliberately.
There is little deliberation in reality.
