Raising a Truly Bilingual Child

Don’t assume that young children’s natural language abilities will lead to true grown-up language skills without a good deal of effort.

Learning language skills requires effort.

The marginal cost of a second language is less than that of the first.

Because of the history of the English language it is first a spoken language.
Low German is another.
Hindi and Cantonese are probably other primarily spoken languages.
The marginal price of them as secondary languages is higher.

Understanding Poetry Is More Straightforward Than You Think

In school, the poet Matthew Zapruder writes, we are taught that poetry is inherently “difficult.” Focusing on one interesting word can change that.

Matthew Zapruder is working hard at teaching.
I will forgive him that.

Shunned During Her Period, Nepali Woman Dies of Snakebite

A tradition of isolating menstruating women in huts persists in rural Nepal despite the dangers and a 2005 court order. Parliament is weighing making it a crime.

I would consider chhaupadi misogyny.
Making chhaupadi unlawful probably will not work.
Regulating the practice would require more social work than
Governments can subsidize.
Literacy and screeds in the papers may work against this
ancient cultural practice.

Are There Long-Term Risks to Egg Donors?

No one looks beyond the short-term effects of the many hormone injections needed to stimulate the release of multiple eggs at one time.

I do not know the hormonal risks to donors.

I am aware of some of the political risks.

It would be “vindictive” to deport adoptees from other countries because their parents failed to apply for U.S. citizenship for them.
