Keep America Wild

Trump has set his developer’s eye on our national monuments.

"In “Walden,” Thoreau wrote that a “man is rich in proportion to the number of things which he can afford to let alone.” For Thoreau’s 200th birthday, let’s let the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument — and all those other deeply treasured, absurdly beautiful American vistas — alone. We can afford to.
Let’s call these places ours, the solid earth, the actual world, held and revered and looked after in common, as common members of this magnificent country. Let’s make America rich again, as deliriously rich as it was on the day Thoreau tried to climb that wild mountain."

Not Your Mother’s Jersey Shore

Five years after Hurricane Sandy destroyed communities along the shore, some towns have used the rebuilding process as a time to reinvent themselves.

Legionnaires’ Outbreak on Upper East Side Kills One and Sickens Six

The city’s health department is investigating the cause of the outbreak in Lenox Hill. The disease infects 200 to 400 New Yorkers a year, the city says.

Cooling towers need more attention.
Another reason for regulation.

A New Kind of Jail for the Opioid Age

Faced with an opiate-addiction epidemic, Kentucky jails are having success helping inmates kick their habits with comprehensive drug treatment.

Some addicts rescue themselves.
Society should help as much as it can.

"It also matters who is hired to run these new jail pods. Mr. Merrick, for example, is highly regarded among Kenton County elected officials and judges for his passion for the job. It’s unclear whether others with less enthusiasm might have the energy for the experiment.
Nor are these pods some magical cure-all to our national affliction. There is no one solution to what our country faces. But what Kentucky jails are doing seems like a smarter use of public money than the counterproductive way so many jails across the country function today.
Amid this national epidemic of opiate addiction, rethinking jail, as Kentucky has, as a place of sanctuary and recovery for a population that has lost hope, might not just be advisable; it may be indispensable."

An effort to end addiction is doomed to failure.
Most addicts will die.
Increasing the pain of addiction only deepens the addiction.
The counter intuitive action of reducing the pain of addiction will help those
who can kick to do so.

Sketching the Bill Cosby Trial

Photography wasn’t permitted at Bill Cosby’s trial. I was asked to be a camera.

" On June 5, Bill Cosby went to trial for the alleged sexual assault of Andrea Constand. After jurors reported being hopelessly deadlocked, the judge in the case declared a mistrial."

I hope that is an end to the matter.

There is no question that Bill Cosby should have behaved differently.

                     His public life is ended.
