The Test-Optional Surge

More than 850 institutions, including research universities and top-tier private colleges, no longer require ACT or SAT scores. Who benefits?

"Wake Forest University, in Winston-Salem, N.C., went test-optional in 2009. “We struggled in the admissions committee for years,” said Martha Blevins Allman, dean of admissions. “What was the meaning of the difference between a 1250 and 1350 SAT score?” Their conclusion: The SAT measured family income, not ability."

"The term merit constitutes a desirable trait or ability belonging to a person or (sometimes) an object."

"Meritocracy (merit, from Latin mereō "I earn" and -cracy, from Ancient Greek κράτος kratos "strength, power") is a political philosophy which holds that power should be vested in individuals almost exclusively according to merit.[1] Advancement in such a system is based on performance measured through examination and/or demonstrated achievement in the field where it is implemented."

Video: High Stakes on the High Seas

At sea, what does it mean for a ship to 'fly a flag?' That was a key, and somewhat improbable, question in a federal drug smuggling case in Manhattan federal court.

"Mr. Prado’s lawyers, Julia L. Gatto, a federal public defender, and Sarah H. Wolf, contend that a videotape made as the Coast Guard boarded the go-fast shows a small Ecuadorean flag — applied as a decal or painted — on the side of the hull. The boat was therefore not stateless and should not have been stopped, they say."

The crew were not engaged in piracy.

Massachusetts: Report Faults Agency in Death of Toddler Found on Beach

A report released by the Office of the Child Advocate of Massachusetts criticized the state’s Department of Children and Families for its handling of the case of Bella Bond, the 2-year-old found dead on a beach in Boston this year.

"A report released on Wednesday by the Office of the Child Advocate of Massachusetts criticized the state’s Department of Children and Families for its handling of the case of Bella Bond, the 2-year-old found dead on a beach in Boston this year. The report said that neglect reports filed in 2012 and 2013 about Bella’s mother, Rachelle Bond, should have received a higher-level response, and that those cases were closed prematurely. The report also said caseworkers failed to gather current information on Ms. Bond and did not adequately assess her parenting ability. The state had previously taken two other children of Ms. Bond’s children from her care because of her long history of arrests and drug use. Ms. Bond’s boyfriend, Michael P. McCarthy, has pleaded not guilty to killing the toddler, and Ms. Bond pleaded not guilty to covering up her death."

There will be trials.
