A Private Boom Amid Detroit’s Public Blight

Across the country, businesses have recovered while the public sector has struggled, and Detroit may be the most extreme example of a city’s dual fates diverging.

The War On Entitlements

Why aren’t we talking about what the public wants when it comes to Social Security and Medicare?
Elderly; Federal Budget (US); Medicare; Social Security (US);

Preaching to the quire.
Congress is wealthy and all their friends are wealthy.
What makes these entitlements is their paid nature.
We paid for them with taxes.  We are entitled to receive them.
They are insurance so what we bought is the benefit, not the cash.
The benefits are full faith and credit of the federal government.
As much a responsibility of the government as interest on treasury bonds.
The G.O.P. is talking about DEFAULT.

Helping Immigrants Warm to Winter

A class in Portland, Me., helps immigrants from places like Central Africa and Iraq adjust to frigid temperatures and icy streets.
Weather; Refugees and Displaced Persons; Immigration and Emigration; Snow and Snowstorms;

I had a great uncle who was a medical missionary in the Persian Gulf .
He would tell a story of his journey down the Red Sea in about 1916.
As a new missionary he was a student of spoken Arabic.  He chose to practice by conversing with his fellow passengers, most of whom were local residents on neutral topics.  He was well aware of the prohibition on proselytizing.  The weather at home seemed a safe topic.  Heat and dust had limited interest for the group.  Water was a preoccupation. In the discussion he mentioned that there were times of the year when the water near his home grew hard, like a rock. He explained to us that "Thereafter we spoke of other things."

Televisions can be found at the Salvation Army Thrift stores, church rummage sales, If one is lucky enough to have a repair shop in the area, there will be abandoned units there.  Out of pawn operations are a good bet.  Check with the churches for a salvage computer and monitor. a net connection is almost a necessity.  The school or district will have a web presence.  www.weather.gov will tell you the local forecast if you type in your zip code.

I am reasonably equipped for cold weather.  I will have to get some gloves.
The clothing moths have been busy.

How much of a television do you want?
I have a receiver card in this computer.  The Dish Network box is a receiver.  it probably has a monitor output. Monitors can be had for about two hundred dollars or be found in the junk.

In Oakland, Photojournalists Covering Crimes Become the Victims

Oakland should hire some literate high school grads and send them out to learn the craft.  Give them a hundred dollar point and shoot and a notebook and an editor.  They can type it up on a desktop and tell the photo editor what in the frame is important.

The stand-up is just an ego boost.  Senior people with desks of their own get bylines.  Ancient Monuments get columns or segments of face time on air.
