Slug on the Tracks

President Obama has repeatedly insisted that there is no reason why Europe or China, rather than the United States, should have the world’s fastest trains, and since coming to office he has committed the country to developing a high-speed rail net...

Actually there are very good reasons. The local administrations wanted to collect the taxes. The operators wanted bigger subsidies. The operators abused their rate setting power. "what the traffic will bear" was the rate policy. The railroad retirement act was passed for good reason. A blown coal fire is a monster. Real estate development pays well once. the list can go on.

Trucking looks more fair to local government. GM & ford & others wanted to sell trucks. Roads were popular. Railroads did not vote. Freight does not complain about spilled drinks.

We know how. It would provide industrial work. The workers would be union.
