Cops vs. Kids
The Kindergarten through 12th grade/age cohort form of public education is outdated and counterproductive. As a direct result of this archaic system many students feel bored and restless because they are either pressed to accelerate or slow their respective pace of learning. One of every 3 students today drops out of high school believing that the school environment is totally irrelevant to their daily lives. Mainstreaming has proven a troublesome concept, especially with regard to children struggling with untreated disruptive behavior disorders. These children need treatment in order to tolerate the stress of learning. Multidisciplinary services should be provided in separate facilities where teachers, aides, and other service providers are adequatley trained to work effectively with this population rather than the punitive/disciplinary approaches that prevail today and are such dramatic failures. Keeping disturbed children in the class with other students deprives all the students of a true educational opportunity. The key to stopping murderous school disasters like Columbine is not an easy prescription. Gun control laws must keep weapons out of the hands of minors. Early detection and intervention programs need to be strengthened where family crises such as addiction, unemployment, parental abandonment, and homelessnessGreat list. Got a fix?
Take a child Matured by stress and manipulation. Place it in a small group with others in similar straits. The result will not be good.
